I recently saw someone microwaving food covered in saran wrap, and I got worried! I had been told that saran wrap was not microwave safe, but apparently it is (I had no idea). Did some googling and read that it's safe to microwave saran wrap if it doesn't touch the food. I'm just so used to covering bowls with a plate though!
Curious what other people do, so I added a poll!

I don't. I either use a moistened paper towel over bowls or a plastic splatter guard with air vents for plates.

I haven't in a long time but my mom would do this to prevent splatter and for somethings it's like using a lid. It keeps the moisture or steam in.
Haven't thought about the safety and plastic part of it though. I guess I would think it was made out of food safe plastic. I have no idea though.
I usually grab a napkin to cover foods in the microwave. Easier to grab than saran wrap that I need to grab from the drawer and use the blade on the box.

No but sometimes my microwaveable 'tv dinner/lunches' say vent the plastic while cooking so I follow the directions.

So for most of my life I was taught to cook sweet potatoes in the microwave by wrapping them in saran wrap - a home version of the microwaveable ones you see at the store. But that's the only thing I've ever heard or seem anyone use saran wrap in the microwave.

We don't have a microwave anymore. 
But at work I cover partially with another plate or lid of some sort.

We used to always use saran wrap in the microwave to avoid a mess, but now we have a microwave cover, so we don't use saran wrap anymore.

I use it to cover the bowl when steaming potatoes in the microwave, but other than that, no.

Never any plastic, I can't imagine the amount of chemicals that leach out of it. It makes me cringe when I see people do it.

I've done it occasionally to steam veggies (stretched over the top of the bowl so it's not touching any food) but now I try not to put plastic in the microwave at all.

No but I don't use Saran Wrap very often! I guess sometimes I use the lid of my glass Tupperware to cover the item I'm microwaving but this thread has me thinking I shouldn't have plastic in the microwave?

We try as hard as we can to not microwave plastic, but sometimes I just need 10 seconds and its not worth dirtying another dish. So in it goes. But ever since we invested in good glass food containers, we dont really use saran wrap anymore so this isn't a huge issue.

As a side note, I am terrible at using plastic wrap, so I pretty much avoid it at all costs.

DH grew up using saran wrap to heat up his food. My parents rarely used a microwave (only to defrost), and I just went along with it. After a few years I got weary of microwaving any kind of plastic, saran wrap included. I still remember DH and his family heating up corn in the microwave by wrapping it in saran wrap...

No, the chemical risk skeeves me out. We use a (plastic) food shield. I try to avoid microwaving plastic in general, but...life.
