I like to get gas when there is about a quarter or an eighth left.
DH usually like to wait til the light goes on. It really annoys me because I stress out about running out of gas.

I'm terrible about it. I try really hard to get some before the light comes on, but I also know that my reserve tank is almost two gallons... so I usually don't. Ooops!

Yep, every single time! I'm always at the gas station at 4:30 in the morning!

Yup. I usually get gas when the pointer is pretty darn close to the E. My car tells me how many more miles I have left so that's how I benchmark when I'll get gas. The closest I've gone to empty empty is 6 miles. Oops!

I wait til neeeaaarly empty. Luckily my car has an indicator that tells me how many miles I have left in the tank and I go by that monitor. Today I was down to 26 miles left and went to get gas at Costco!

I fill it up when it's just under a half tank...that's just how my parents did it...that way you are never running late bc you have to stop and get gas...or if there is an emergency you aren't delayed bc you don't have enough gas to make it.
My husband was raised the opposite - wait to get gas until the tank is almost empty. It is such a hassle when you are leaving to go somewhere and realize there isn't enough gas so you have to stop and get it. He is slowly switching to my way of thinking

@Alivoo01: I've driven (to the gas station!) on zero miles til empty!
I wait, unless I see it for cheap or I'm going a long distance & don't want to stop.

Yes, my husband gets onto me ALL the time for driving around with my gas light on. I try and get better about it in the winter. I'll always wait too long, and then it'll be bad weather and I have to get gas in the morning...it's freezing cold and takes forever to get to work. Better get better about it before baby gets here!

I used to, but it drives DH crazy. He usually fills my tank up when it's 1/4 full.

I used to wait until the light came on in my old car, but my new one has a different system, so I usually wait until 1/8 left and then fill up.

I keep track by miles. I know I can get 400 miles per tank, so I fill up when my trip counter gets to be around 400. I've never had the light come on. I drive a Yaris and the gas gauge is bars and when it's on the last bar it starts blinking then it starts blinking really fast. Makes me stressed when I see that blinking bar!

Yep, and DH lets it get even lower. Except right now, he's not letting it get below half-empty so we won't have to worry about it when I go into labor.

I used to. Now with a little one, I worry about that more.

It's rare that my gas light shows, I'm a freak about getting gas when it's at a half or a quarter tank left. I had heard that over time sediment starts forming in the bottom of your gas tank, and if you let it run to empty your engine may start pulling in some of those particles. Not sure how true that is, but it's really distracting to me to have the light on ;).

@Rubies: Ditto! I rarely get below 1/4.
@StrawberryBee: That sediment can impact the level of fullness your gauge displays . . . you could be emptier than you think!

I do all the time. DH gives me a hard time, something about air being sucked up and killing my engine in the long run?
