The young years are way too tough for me to be a SAHM, but I wouldn't mind it when they are in school! Haha of course they'd be gone all day until 3. I really enjoy working though, so I doubt I'll end up being a SAHM.
Do you not want to be a SAHM now, but want to when your LOs are older? Or vice versa so that you're there for the early years?

I don't have the goal to be SAHM at all. But part time work sounds ideal, so I will see how that works out for me! I definitely don't want to get stale in my skills...

I would love to continue being a stay at home mom when my kids are in school but I'm not sure how feasible that will be financially. Will have to wait and see.

I would love to be, but I dont know if we could afford it. In my ideal world, yes I'd be a sahm and have plenty of time to run errands, cook, grocery shop, clean, etc when the kids were in school. I also want to volunteer at their school.
But ill probably end up working part time, just when they're in school.

I'm a SAHM and probably will be once LO goes to school. I wish I could work part time but given my previous line of work, it's just not possible. I'm going to start volunteering again once LO get a little older.

I worked with a woman who had four children all 3-4 years a part in age and she actually stopped working once the youngest hit school age. She found that by the time she found after school care for each of them and then factored in all their extracurricular activities it was better for her to be home.
I remember her saying how much she enjoyed being able to help out at school, go on school camp etc!

I'd be happy to be a SAHM as long as I had some kind of care - daycare, preschool, elementary school. I have so many projects on my to-do list, I could stay busy for years!

DH and I talked about this, and I'd prefer to be working when they are in school all day. That is one of the big reasons I want to go back to work after mat leave. I don't want to be outmoded from the workforce.

My son started kindergarten this year and its been weird. I get bored during the day cause we currently just have a small apartment that doesn't get real messy cause he isn't here until 2 to mess it up!
I'm due with my girl in March though so I'll have company during the day again.

My mom worked when I was a baby and stayed home for most of my elementary years. I plan to do somewhat of the opposite. I'll be staying home when s/he is a baby and will more than likely find a part time gig when school starts. I'll still want to be available to help out at school and attend events but I don't really see the point in not working at all. Who knows though, I may very well change my mind after a few glorious years off.

I'd like to be able to work part-time, or be home when my kids get home. I was a latch-key kid from grade 5 onwards and to be honest it kind of sucked.

I think so! But I've also always wanted to open my own store so who knows. I feel like a store would give me some flexibility in schedule to do things like drop off/pick up kids from school and have my own time.

No way! I love being able to parent full time, but I miss the intellectual stimulation of working in research. I'd like to work part time when my children go to school, but still have time to keep the house. Half time would be ideal.
And in 10 or 15 years I'm hoping to go back to school and start a career as a genetic counselor, probably full time. We'll see how live evolves, though.

My mom was for awhile and got bored as heck. She did everything-it just got boring, unfilfilling, and isolating. I could do it a day a week, but 5 days ? No way! Part time would be great, though! But even with a full time job, DH will be there for school pick up, and I am very about that

If I had the option to not work again, I'd love to stay home! There's really not as much free as one might think. Once you drop them at school, if you go to the gym, run errands, come home, have lunch, clean, pack lunches/lay things out for the next day, start prepping dinner, then you have to pick kids up and do their after school activities, have dinner, do homework, get them all ready for bed, and repeat!!!! Plus there are so many days the kids don't have school.

@prettylizy: I agree, I went back to work because I want to work while they are in school. Ideally, I would love to drop to part time and work like 20-30 hours / week. Just enough to stay busy and out of the house while they are at school but still be free for when they are out of school and have activities.

I'm happy as a wahm and doubt I'd be satisfied without my work. But maybe that will change when I have more than one child and the kids aren't high maintenance newborn blobs.

I can't wait to go back to work when the youngest is in kindergarten. I was (am?) a teacher, so I would be getting out about the same time as them, and have similar days off. But we are planning on trying for a third baby this year, and I don't think I could afford to go back to work with three that would need daycare.

Ideally I'd be a WAHM when my LO is in school full-time...but then I'd have to figure out a job where I can work at home! Either way, I'd like to be working at that time since retiring at 30 isn't an option!

I wouldn't, but that's because I'm a teacher, so if anything...I would just scheme to get my kids in the same district/school as me so they don't need after-school care and can just come to my room until I'm ready to go home.

No idea...I guess ideally I'd work part-time when LOs are all in school. I'm a SAHM now, but I'd like to start part time work sometime toward the middle of this year. If I didn't go back to work when they're all in school, I would definitely want to find some kind of volunteer work.

I'm hoping by the time we have LO #2, I could go to working either 3 days a week, or 5hr days. Which is years always since I'm barely 5wk with #1 haha - I'd go part time now if we could afford it - the curse of being ambitious and having a good job is it is hard to let that money go!

I am a SAHM and I would like to continue into their school years. I don't think I will ever go back to full time teaching but I will probably take on some tutoring hours while they are in school. I was also thinking about opening a etsy shop. That way my hours are flexible so I can be home when they are sick and volunteer at the school.

I would! My mom was a SAHM during my school years and she kept busy volunteering at my school (room mom, PTA, etc) and also was always working in her garden, sewing... things like that. I would like to do that also... I know I could find plenty to keep me busy and I would like to be there when my kids get off the bus.

Definitely. I'm a WOHM now but really want to be able to be there for my kids when they get home from school, if they get sick at school, etc. If anything, I'd work in the mornings or maybe 2-3 days/week.

I would LOVE to be a SAHM when my kids are in school - I would love to take courses that I enjoy, volunteer at my kids' school, etc.
