I do! But I don't like Love it or List it Too. Jillian, the designer, never does anything super impressive (and I can't get over that she was on the bachelor).

I like the original one better too. Jillian seems so low budget and average ideas compared to the other designer.

@Kimberlybee: that's interesting that you think that considering the homes in Vancouver are worth 2-3x more than the homes they show in Toronto! Maybe it seems low-budget because she has so much less space to work with?
We don't have cable so I don't get to watch it anymore, but I prefer the original show.

@Kimberlybee: I know! If I had a large budget, I would be bummed if the designer chose all ikea furniture (in one of the episodes she did at least). Maybe HGTV pays for the furniture though.

I love the original one. Hillary, the designer, does beautiful work and I think she's very graceful when some of the couple all but curse her out when she tells them "Hey, this beam here that's holding up your entire second floor is full of rot & needs to be replaced, so I can't afford to give you XYZ without more money." Erm, pretty sure I want my house still standing. The realtor is funny too although he tends to show lots of homes over budget.
I'd love to have Hilary redesign or just design a house for us. It seems like she blends practical with beautiful really well.
Not such a fan of the spin off one. The designer lady just isn't quite my taste although she does good work.

I'm watching it right now! I never liked the original one but I like the "Too". I never watch the Bachelor and had no idea she was on it! I think I didn't care for the original because the few I watched made it seem like the couples where vehemently opposed and the conflict stressed me out lol

I think it is an interesting concept for a show and I watch it a lot, but I HATE how dramatic everything is.
There is always so much fake (in my opinion) tension between the homeowners and the competition between the designer and realtor seems hokey to me. And while I appreciate that they show construction issues and problems that eat up the budget, everyone always seems so mad and rude.
I have a love/hate relationship with the show.

Yes!! My DAD even watched a few episodes! haha
Sometimes I find the homeowners to be totally obnoxious..but they usually are on hgtv! I MUST HAVE EVERYTHING ON MY LIST OR ELSE, HILLARY!!!

I agree with preferring the original, but it's gets so tiresome that Hillary runs into massive issues EVERY episode. A- it's unrealistic. Not every house in the world is going to have thousands of dollars worth of structural issues. B- good contractors build a contingency fund into the budget so that those kind of issues don't mean a massive overhaul to the plan. I get that it's unlikely her choice (probably the producers or something), but it's annoying. Every other show they run into that level of trouble on very few episodes, and they are better prepared to handle it.

I watch it occasionally but I NEVER care what the new design of the home looks like because I always, 100% "List It".
I just feel like if someone doesn't like a place for so long, they need to leave, not change it ever so slightly and stay.

@Torchwood: I feel like more often then not, though, they start out already knowing the budget is small for all the work they want done. This has made me a little paranoid about buying a home in the future! There was one episode where they were working in the basement and basically the house was unsupported and sagging and I can't imagine the shock of finding that out after you've been walking across those floors (and having your los there too!) every day.

@TemperanceBrennan: Yes, this! I get so sick of all the fake drama.
Whenever the home owners are like, "Gasp! I can't believe that an unforeseen problem has arisen and now you won't be able to do x, y or z! I'm so angry!" I always want to yell, "HAD YOU NEVER SEEN THIS SHOW BEFORE YOU SIGNED UP TO BE ON IT?!" because that happens on every episode and is obviously planned!

@MamaMagpie: lol I'm watching it too
@Torchwood: true, just one episode, I'd like for nothing to be wrong with the home haha

@CupQuakeWalk: I'm always on the list it side too. Except for once when the original house had a fantastic view and nothing else could measure up.

@heartonastring: @googly-eyes: I'm convinced the producers coach the homeowners to be demanding. I've seen several episodes where the homeowners seem to be acting or being fed lines. Especially because at the end, both homeowners are on completely the same page and everything is hunky-dory.
I also hate how silly the endings are. Ok homeowners, you only have 30 seconds to make a huge life-altering and financial decision about where you and your family will live. Talk it over while we stare at you.

I love that show! I prefer the original, too. But I do agree that it seems like on every episode, 1.) something is horribly wrong with the us and 2.) the owners are so mean! Hahaha.
That's one of the shows I actually miss now that we don't have cable anymore.
pomegranate / 3895 posts
@TemperanceBrennan: oh yeah, I'm 100% certain they're told to act that way. You can tell they're acting...mostly because their acting is generally pretty brutal!

@TemperanceBrennan: yes! This!
I have a love/hate with it. I do kind of like the "too" one better. Only because I find the Realtor on that less annoying. Something about the realtor on the original bugs me. And a lot of it seems fake to me. And why is there always unforeseeable problems???
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
@mrskc: I agree on the "always' being problems...it never fails! I enjoy the show but get annoyed at the annoying people! ha
pomegranate / 3113 posts
@TemperanceBrennan: everything you said.
I also hate the "recap" at the end of the show where the narrator says "the home was originally valued at $475k, they put $25k into it, it's now valued at $510k. This increased the value of the home by $35k!" because a) I can do simple math, thanks very much, and b) yes, the home is worth more, but they still had to pay for the reno so they really only came out $10k ahead. And if they're listing it, between taxes and realtor fees and all the other closing costs involved, they probably actually LOST money. But she never tells that part of the story. Grr.
Oh, and it ticks me off that Hillary never seems to check building codes. "We just found out that the 1500 sq ft addition I designed will end up to close to your lot line so I can't build it now! I had no idea that this area had environmental restrictions that require us to use materials that cost 3x what I budgeted! We just found out that the basement bedroom will be nonconforming even though I've done hundreds of them before, but it's the code inspector's fault, not mine!"

@temperancebrennan I agree! I find it hard to believe that every single house the show works on has all of these surprise problems...and most houses have many! There's no way the home owners or producers have no idea about ANY of these issues before a budget is decided on.
I like the show, but like many of HGTV's shows, the made-up drama really bothers me. I want to tell them that the shows would be just as good (better, even) without the made-up drama. Sometimes I just have to fast forward to the end result!

DH and I saw Hillary at Tiffany's in downtown Toronto (just picking up an ornament for MIL...nothing too exciting) and she came in while we were in line. It was Christmas, and busy, and she came in carrying her dog and loudly exclaimed that she couldn't believe how long the line was and how she needed help right away and couldn't wait. The way she acted sorta made me realize that maybe some of the drama in the show isn't fake

I watch it ... Most homeowners treat the designers like shit, and it makes me feel so bad for them!
