Do you work in a male dominated field? How has that affected your maternity leave and/or return to work? What field is it?
I'm a software developer and my manager called my maternity leave "vacation"... I don't know if it was on purpose or if the words just temporarily escaped him!
I feel like the main disadvantage is that my job doesn't lend itself to part time work and that people work *all* the time.

I am. I work in the oil & gas industry and the company I work for has a very long history and a few dinosaurs here. I'm the youngest in our office by at LEAST 20 years and it can be super frustrating. Especially because the men are from that chauvinistic generation. One man who doesn't work here any more always referred to mat leave as "vacation". Thankfully it didn't affect me at the time and he's gone now that it does.
So far everyone has been pretty good. I think some of our old guys are doing a little changing with the times. Although, it's still fresh news at the office so there's always time for that to change.

No - the opposite, I'm an elementary teacher. There's only 1 male teacher in our school!
he likes to bug us though and get us all riled up....saying he has to "babysit" his kids while his wife goes to yoga, telling us to have a "great vacation" when we go off on maternity leave...all in fun though, lol

I am! I'm an engineer in the defense industry. Very few women here. And over half the company can retire within 5 years. My boss has kids so he's been really great about everything. And he knows I'm coming back.
Who calls maternity leave a vacation?! Geez.

@blackbird: It sounds like we work in the same place! Sooo many people have retired in the last few years that the company actually seems younger now than when I first started 8 years ago. Either that or I'm getting old....

I'm in social work so it's mostly women, but I quit my job before I got pregnant so it didn't matter anyway.
Vacation made me laugh though

Yes, law, no lo yet but I imagine I'm in your boat as people in my field work all the time based on client demand.

Field? No. I'm in accounting, and 4 out of the 5 of us are women. But industry? Yes, I'm in the construction industry in their accounting dept
