I'm on vacation this week and just did an hour of work on the beach. (literally - we can't get 3G at the beach house so I worked from the beach. In the truck.) I check my work email twice a day on vacation - so does my husband. Do you manage to disconnect while you're on PTO? How do you do it?

Nope, my job isn't imporatnt enough that I need to check in! Coworkers have my cell phone number if the need is dire

I can't check my work e-mail anywhere besides from my work computer. Boss doesn't really want confidential client information available anywhere, so no files leave the office either.
So, I can't work when I'm out of the office, even if I wanted to (which I don't).

I can't really complain too much. We dont have to make up time for dr appointments and occasionally leaving early. It's a trade off.

I often have conference calls that I can't reschedule while on vacation. And then once you are on the call, you always get an assignment. I'm so bad about that stuff!

I can't really do anything outside of work, except maybe check my e-mail, and nothing's THAT important that I need to be connected. Work does just fine when I'm gone for a week on vacation.

I think the last time I went more than one weekday without checking work email was in 2007.
But I do feel like there's a good trade-off in the sense that, because everyone knows I keep up with things when I'm gone, there's generally no problem with me working from home, or working from my parents' house if we're visiting them, or working from any other location when I need to. So I can easily say "Hey, I'd like to be out of the office for two weeks around Christmas, but I'll only take 4 vacation days since I'll just work remotely the rest of the time." Which is nice. -
Nope! I am on vacation for a reason. We are going on vacation next week. I am sure DH will check his email once a day, but he won't actually do any work. I won't allow it!

I own my business, so I can't really disconnect from work. I'll always try and check email once a day, even if in a foreign country. Next week and we're going on a cruise and internet rates are HORRIBLE!! $35/hr... I don't know what I'm going to do!!

My husband is in sales so he actually doesn't get any PTO. He can take vacation, but his numbers still have to be good and he is still expected to respond to customer emergencies.

I used to, I'd get phone calls at all hours of the day and night. It got annoying! I drew the line at checking emails on my personal laptop though. If they wanted me to check emails, they would have needed to issue me a Blackberry and I wasn't senior enough for one.

I said absolutely not, but there have been a handful of occasions where I will check in on something that is urgent and quick and I couldn't get finalized before leaving. I'm not required to, but on occasion I've done it.

DH and I are very lucky in that both of our jobs are pretty low-stress and when we're on vacation, we don't have to worry about them. We just got back from a 2-week trip and neither one of us did any work the entire time.

Absolutely, but I try to keep it to a minimum. I am always on call for questions from staff (which fortunately is rare) and check my e-mail first and last thing.
Our vacation last week was a conference with a few days at the beach. One day we will have a vacation again that is not conference/family obligations!

Nope. The most I might do is check my email the night we get home, so that I don't have 85,000 emails to go through when I return to the office. Otherwise, I'm unplugged and inaccessible.

Like @eiko2010 I usually check the day before I return to prioritize my first day back. If I know of anything pressing while I'm gone I try to check once or twice.

I don't work at all. I don't bring my blackberry and I don't bring my laptop. The company is big enough that they can find someone to answer a question for me.

Never. Helps that I've never had a job that I could do from out of the office.

i used to have a job where i checked my email on vacation so i wouldn't get crushed by the onslaught upon my return and in case there were emergencies, but at my current job there's no need. no one expects me to be available during vacation, and i'm not!
