After hearing that a 10 year old girl died from a combination of the virus plus a staph infection, it brings out the worry wart in this mother. I don't worry about Ebola. I worry about this, it's something that comes on like the common cold. Hello, my kid's in daycare. It's Fall and it's daycare cold season. Now I know all I'll be thinking is "does she have Enterovirus? Is she breathing okay??" Oy.

I didn't but it's officially in our city now per the local Children Hospital report. So now I am worried. Not terribly so until she gets sick.

I didn't until Xander got hospitalized. 
I'm glad I hadn't heard about this poor girl prior because I would've been even more scared! So sad to hear that she died.

I'm worried because my kids don't handle respiratory illnesses well at all. I'm pretty worried about Ebola too! Dallas is way too close for comfort.

I'm worried because it's been confirmed in our county, and Chloe seems to get hit *hard* by illnesses. She is also more susceptible to allergies and asthma because I have them.

and i worry that if she catches anything, that she'll pass it along to our newborn!

Yes, I worry! My husband and I even talked last night about what ER we would go to if we notice wheezing in the kids. I stress myself out!

LO might have had it. The test was inconclusive because it was contaminated. But he never had a cough. The PA pointed out it didn't really matter what he had though. He is doing better now. He just wouldn't nurse because he was so stuffy but he never got dehydrated.

Eh. I worry about cold and flu season in general. There are so many things out there...RSV, Croup, the Flu.... Yes enterovirus can be serious, but so can all the other ones. Wish little man wasn't in daycare so he wouldn't have as much exposure, but hey it's all about building immunity right? haha

Yes, I do worry. LO has had a cold/cough for about a week, and I am constantly on the lookout for any signs of wheezing. I realize there's not much that you can do, but still, I worry.

I did some digging and sometimes you can't even tell your kid has signs of enterovirus. This boy seemed like he had no symptoms and was on the up and up when he died in his sleep.

I only worry because my husband works in the pediatric department of the hospital. And I work in a women's jail. Both are places were illnesses spread like wildfire, and we are both exposed to a lot. He and I both try to be very cautious (washing our hands as soon as we get home, changing our clothes, etc.) but I'm definitely nervous.

Yes, I'm pretty worried. I never fussed that much about illnesses, but when J got croup in May and I heard/saw stridor, I changed my tune. Both my brothers had asthma as kids, and croup can indicate susceptibility to respiratory issues, so I'm stressed about it spreading

Yep, Liam is at the end of a cold and in the hacking cough stage. Yesterday, my husband kept him home from preschool because he had just watched a segment about the virus and got nervous.

So sad!! And some of the symptoms look like your typical cold, so how could parents even know it's enterovirus?

@Mrs. High Heels: Horrible!! I really hope that mother doesn't blame herself for not knowing he was sick, I think it would be hard not to in her shoes. Heartbreaking all around.

@coopsmama: She said that was being blown out of proportion and wasn't much different than what she sees every year. Basically, yes, it's out there but it's nothing to lose sleep over.
ETA: She didn't say it wasn't dangerous but didn't think it was worth worrying about.

@Meltini: That's good to know. I saw a really interesting article about how a health editor at The New York Times fought to NOT put an enterovirus article on the front page because she thought it would alarm people more than necessary.

I definitely am. D has ASD, and is therefore more susceptible to respiratory. Every time he coughs, I panic a little inside.

I worry about this season in general. My DD had RSV when she was 6 months old and that was not fun at all. Trying to stay calm in general though as panicking doesn't help.

Yep. I watched DS sleep for like 5 minutes a few weeks ago when he had a cold...I wanted to make sure he was breathing okay!

Those cases are so sad and so scary Worrying of course, because the kid is in day care.
Anyone know why there's no vaccine? Is it because it's so rare, or is it one of those viruses like the common cold that's hard to develop vaccines for?
