My husband and I have a 2 week old, and so far we have had my dad visit and his in-laws are currently here. Neither of them have bothered to pick up after themselves. Dishes are everywhere when they are done, and that is such a big pet peeve of mine. When I am a guest at someone's house, I make sure I keep the place as clean (or cleaner) than it was. It's a respect and common sense thing, or so I thought. Do you all have an issue with this, or is this just me being ocd?

Usually our house guests help around the house! My mom is a cooking and cleaning machine. :T Can't imagine how stressful/annoying it must be for you! I know I had a super short fuse the first couple of weeks after my LO was born.

@chopsuey119: Thank you. It annoys me so much. I told my husband to talk to them before I do. I maybe sort of went off on them yesterday for another reason, and I really don't want to go off on them again. So yes, I also have a short fuse I guess you could say lol

@marriedandlovingit: Usually I don't mind, but if they are there to visit my *newborn* and don't clean up--I WILL send them away.
They owe it to you to help out since they get to see the little baby. -
What?! That seems crazy to me! I'd be so annoyed if I was recovering from childbirth and taking care of a newborn then someone staying at my house expected me to clean up after them? No way.
If anything, I think they should be there to help you clean and take care of your new LO. -
The whole reason they should be there is to HELP you! My mother leaves my house cleaner than she found it every time. And I don't even have a baby yet.

I would flip out... My parents and brother were so helpful and cleaned up around the house when they stayed with us!

Anyone that stays at my house leaves it cleaner than when they came. I would be so annoyed if I were you!! Especially with a newborn. Sheesh.

We don't have anyone ever stay at our house since everyone lives near. My family is great about cleaning up after themselves when they visit. They wash up after themselves and will even pull out a vacuum or broom of needed. Thankfully they usually leaves things as they were, if not better. DH's family isn't quite the same way, but they aren't really messy so it's okay.

My mom just left, and she left the house far better than she found it.
I love mom visits.

My parents not only clean up after themselves, but they do some routine chores too. I don't know that my mom has even come without running the vacuum cleaner at least once during her visit; although that could be because our newfie gets up from laying down and there is usually a dog print in fur on the carpet which my mom can't stand.

OMG I would totally flip out on someone if that happened to me. I would start by complaining to my husband but after that, I would just tell the guests, look - I'm trying to keep up with a brand new baby and you guys. Can you please clean up when you're done in a room? GAH.

The only houseguests we have on a regular basis is my family and they always help clean up.

I ask people to help if I need them too, but usually expect nothing. With a newborn, I will expect everyone to help (and hopefully I stick to my guns and let them knowit!) -

I agree with pps, people *visiting* you at this time should be there to help, not to add to your workload and stress. If anything, I have to keep my parents and in-laws from doing too much while they're here.

Yes mine always make their bed and pick up after themselves in the bathroom and kitchen. So I've had no negative reactions yet!

It depends on who visits us. If it's my mom the house ends up cleaner than when she arrived. I love when my mom visits. With my MIL, not so much, I end up having to clean up after she leaves.

Ummmm..... we didn't have houseguests when LO was a newborn, but we had people come over and clean up after us then!

We don't have overnight guests since everyone lives around here but last Sunday I cooked a huge meal for mother's day and my mom helped me cook, my dad did the dishes, and my mil dried/put away. It was heavenly (and it's pretty routine..that's how it always happens when they come over).

My inlaws are here for three weeks. Not only do they pick up after themselves, they also do all the dishes and want to know what yard and handywork they can do while here. It's pretty nice!

We haven't had any overnight guests yet. My dad and my siblings will be here in a couple of weeks. They better clean up after themselves!
We've had some of DHs coworkers over for dinner and they made sure they didn't leave a mess. & they brought their dishes in the kitchen to me. I was glad they didn't leave them all over the place.

Our house guests have cleaned up after themselves. One even did the dishes every day without it being even vaguely suggested ('course, he did steal my best towel and a DVD.) Even my BIL (at 16) rinsed his dishes. I would lose it too if I had messy house guests when I have a newborn.
I love mom visits.
