I'm 32 and my parents still try to hide things from me so I won't worry! My Dad had a heart attack last year, was hospitalized and had a big surgery while my brother and I were in the dark! My mom still answered my calls and texts like everything was just fine until she broke down a few weeks later. 
I wonder if I will shelter my kids like this in the future?!?

I can't believe they hid something that big from you. Your poor mom probably could have used some support.
My parents hid a surgery my mom had when I was in high school until I came home and found her in pain on the sofa. I flipped out. Since then I don't think they've hid anything....but I guess I'll never know.

My parents shelter me. Sometimes my dad's heart goes into a-fib and earlier this year it happened while he was in St Lucia. They didn't tell me because they knew I would freak out and not let him travel any more. I'm a serious daddy's girl and I lose my shit when something bad happens to him. A few months afterwards my mom slipped up and mentioned something about their credit card number being stolen at the hospital in St Lucia and the truth came out. I was NOT pleased.

No, they are pretty open with me. My dad tries to hide things now that I'm pregnant because he doesn't want to stress me out. I would probably kill my parents if they hid something like a major surgery from me. Mainly because I would want to see him before the surgery because my grandma had a routine surgery but never woke up from the anesthesia so I insist on being there for even the most mundane procedures.

While I was living abroad, my mom put down our 2 dogs and never told me. She finally only mentioned it over a year later. They were old, but still! Poor things

Yup, my mom shelters everything from me. On one hand, I appreciate what she's trying to do and love her dearly for it. On the other hand, it's frustrating because she keeps all of the stress herself and I think it would be beneficial if she shared some of it with me. I don't blame her though. I would probably do the same thing with my kids. =\

They wouldn't try to permanently keep something from me, but they do sometimes delay telling me things until it is a better time.

Yeah, they do. My dad has been having some health problems lately and does NOT want me to know about things like that. He doesn't want to worry me. My mom is pretty open about most things though, I THINK.

My mom definitely does- she came to my wedding (in December) knowing she had ovarian cancer and didn't say anything to anyone about it. She only told me about a month ago when she realized she wasn't going to be able to successfully hide her surgeries from me.

No, my mom is super open. My Dad passed away last year from cancer but he was super open through all of that.

My parents are totally like that they didn't want to worry me during my pregnancy and after the birth of my child, so I found out during a recent trip to see them that both of my childhood pets died a YEAR AGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
