My inlaws are considering buying a summer home in VA to get away from the Florida heat all summer long. It's kind of exciting because it means they will be just 3 hours away during the summer!

My MIL has a cabin in NC. She spends half the year there and half the year in Louisiana.

Nope. My parents like to travel to different places so it wouldn't make sense for them to have a second home. They like variety in their vacations.

My grandmother has a house on Cape Cod that our whole family goes to. It was such an important part of my childhood and I can't wait to take M this summer!

Sort of...DH's aunt owns a 3 level cabin on the Cheseapeake Bay in MD. She works in Belgium half the year and lives on the top level when she's home. ILs rent the middle level from her, and go down 1-2 weekends a month. DH and I go down and spend weekends down there sometimes too.
ETA: totally misread the question. The cabin isn't a summer or winter home but more of a weekend home.

@MrsF: that's the other thing I'm cautiously excited about. This would be a great way for M to meet her cousins!!

My in laws have a lake house they go to on weekends. I haaate going there because it's 2 hrs away and I'm not a lover of water sports. Or sitting on the porch and looking at the water. Or driving 2 hours to sit around and watch tv...which they do a LOT.

@MrsF: Cape Cod; I'm jealous!!
My MIL lives in La Jolla (San Diego) and just bought a condo near us. She'll spend time there in the fall, spring and summer (she is retiring this summer).
My FIL and step-MIL have homes in Long Beach, CA and NC and split time between.

My ILs keep talking about a condo at the beach but haven't yet. It will 6 hours away from us though

My family has a summer cottage on the beach. It's only about 5 minutes from our house so we go there often throughout the week for meals/sandbar walks/family time. DH and I have a week booked to stay there this summer with my sister and her fiance. I'm really looking forward to it! Even though it's so close to home, it kind of feels like another world.

No, but I would love it if our ILs had a winter cabin in the snow. That would be amazing.

Nope! DHs parents had a cottage before I knew them, so I wish they still did!!

Ooh nice! My parents have 3 houses up in the mountains. Lots of fruit trees up there.
They use it mostly for church retreats and stuff.

@MrsF: DH's grandmother lives on Cape Cod year round. So while it's not a vacation home, we have someplace to stay when we go out to the Cape and I'm sure she will be thrilled to have her first great grandchild visit (she told us a few years back that she was ready to be a great-grandmother any time
But otherwise, no, none of our families have vacation homes.

My parents have had a lake house in NH for almost 20 years now. My in-laws have a cottage up north in MI but it's *very* rural/rustic.
Our goal is to own one on Martha's Vineyard one day!

MIL and FIL have a vacation home in the Poconos, PA they're actually going to retire there.

My parents purchased a large chunk of property in the NC mountains that they're planning on building a cabin on sometime in the near future. It gets hot in FL, so it'll be nice to be able to head up there and get away from the heat. My aunt and uncle currently have one there already, and we're able to use it anytime, but the whole family likes to tag along if you go, so we never use it.
My FIL owns a beach and river condo, which are just weekend homes, and we rarely use them, but my MIL's family owns a lakehouse that no one uses but us, so we go there regularly.

My parents had a beach house until DH and I got married and moved away. They've been looking for a smaller one ever since, but it's been 3 years!

Sort of? My parents own property with a 5th wheel trailer on it in a resort area.

Yup, my parents own a place in the St. Pete area of FL. They go down there for most of the winter and sometimes in the fall. We usually go visit in February or March. I can't wait until LO is old enough to enjoy it :).

@mediagirl: VA is awesome, but do your parents know what the weather is like here? It's been 90 the past few days and it's not summer yet!

In-laws just bought a beach house as a weekend home. My family also has a beach house that we go to a lot during the summer, but no one spends the whole season there. It's awesome!

My family has a beach house. Can't wait to bring baby to the beach!

My parents built a lake cabin about 15 years ago, about 2 hours away from their home. It is really nice but all but two sets of neighbors are bat shit crazy. Though you have to be careful. .. last time I was there I found a rattlesnake nest on the beach!

My parents have a house on the beach...it's their primary residence. Going next week!
