What kind of lilies? You can take off the things inside, that's where the smell comes from! I always take off the things that the pollen comes from because I'm allergic to the pollen. The smell comes from the little pieces further in. You can easily pull them out. just do it with a tissue because it'll be all over your hands!
Yes, do you like my technical floral terminology??

@mrs. wagon: So the little brown things?? I can just pull those off and they won't smell as bad??? lol

@MrsBrewer: whoo, just looking at the orange pollen makes my nose twitch! Yup, if I were you I'd definitely take off the orange parts and snip off a bit of the green pointy parts. You'll feel them, they're sticky.

@mrs. wagon: wait, what green pointy parts??? lol sorry I'm an idiot when it comes to flowers!

@MrsBrewer: haha! The stuff in the middle. So definitely pick off the orange parts (they're kind of long and skinny and you'll see the pollen start to dust off of them) and then reach in and either pull off or snip off the little stems they were attached to.

This should go into the 'tips and tricks' thread! DH bought me two vases worth of those exact flowers for Valentine's Day last year and the smell was so overpowering! **filing this away for next time**

My husband loves stargazer lilies and always brings them home, but I can't stand the smell!
So pretty though!

@mrskc: You know, I don't mind the smell, but I've been hearing comments from my coworkers that they think they stink So I feel bad and I don't want to make them upset!

I love stargazer lillies! The little "pollen stems" should always be removed from the inside, because leaving them attached will actually end up killing the flower quicker once they're cut and in a vase. (This is what I learned working in a floral shop when I was younger, ha). That should cut back on the smell, too, as others have mentioned

@Pepper: I trimmed all of those back, and I actually cut out that center piece too. So basically I just cut all of the dangling stuff in the middle!

@MrsBrewer: boo! I didn't realize people didn't like the smell of those. I've always loved them. I always take off the pollen stems b/c I don't want them to fall off and stain something.
