It happened, he's starting to get very serious about his hands! Last night we fought over me trying to pop a pacifier in his mouth so he wouldn't gnaw off his fist. Does this usually lead to thumb-sucking? Just wondering if it's inevitable and my efforts are all for naught.

For our LO, it didn't. When he found his hands, that was his way of self-soothing, but he's never sucked his thumb and he's 22 months now.

Meh, E always chewed on her arms and hands and has never sucked her thumb. Yet. Sometimes I think they like the squish of flesh.

@spaniellove: It didn't for us at all! I have only seen LO suck a thumb twice and he's 15 months now.

LO is only 12 weeks but so far, no. She found her hands around 5 weeks and got REALLY SERIOUS about them around 9 weeks. Occasionally she'll stick a few fingers in her mouth (usually thumb and forefinger at the same time) but she almost never just sucks on her thumb.

My son gnawed on his hand forever but never started sucking his thumb. He never took a pacifier either.

For us, it didn't. My DD chewed her hands so much they started cracking. She's 11 months now and isn't a thumb sucker.

Nope. Mine went straight from paci to thumb. Never chewed her hands.

So far at 18 weeks, no. Although they do try to sneak their way into her mouth while BFing ALL. THE. TIME.

Wagon Jr. loved his pacifier until he found his fingers. He sucked his fingers nonstop for self-soothing, and we didn't try to stop him. He dropped it on his own around 2 years old so we got lucky.

Nope, not for us. It was usually a sign of hunger for our #1.

I hope not. M is pretty serious about his hands. I hate the pacifier, which he uses to fall asleep, so I feel like it's the lesser of two evils.

This is interesting! DD1 was a paci addict turned thumb addict at around 3 months...she still sucks it sometimes at 2. DD2 is 3 months and H's started munching on her hands like crazy recently - curious to see how this evolves..

Not for us. She's putting her hands in her mouth a lot now because she is teething, but before it was very sporadic.

After reading some of these replies I'm starting to worry that he might be teething soon...when I think about it he's been touching his ears an awful lot lately. And I don't know if this is a thing but he's been sticking out his tongue the last few days which I thought was weird.
