Doesnt bother me either. I think anyone would get excited about an unexpected paid day off.

The thing along these lines that really bothered me was the bumper sticker I saw that read: "The three best things about being a teacher: June, July, and August!". Haven't seen that one recently, but yes, I think things like that are bad for the teaching profession's public image (which already isn't good where I live...).

@char54: I agree, since it happens so often, I dont' understand why they have to make a post about it.

@char54: (waves hi) Former classroom teacher here! It doesn't bother me, although I've never given it much thought. I'm glad they can get a break and still remember that happy feeling. We don't always get snow where I live, so everyone writes excited posts on Facebook when we actually do, regardless of their profession.

@char54: I am a elementary teacher and I have been known to post "snow day!" or something of that nature. It doesn't bother me, but around here we go some years without a snow day, and this year we've gotten three. It all depends. It would annoy me too if we got one every couple of weeks and people were posting.

Here they don't close the school, just cancel busses.

My moms been a teacher for 40+ years. She's never taken a day off in her life. There's always marking. (And during the summer she goes to China to reach ESL).

@char54: I think you make a really good point. It doesn't annoy me for one second when I see those posts from my own friends (I'd never begrudge anyone a snow day!) - but I think if I were a teacher I might feel that all the "yippee I don't have to go to work" posts were damaging to the reputation of my profession. It's like when my husband tells everyone that I stroll into work when I feel like it and come home early every day because I work "in the public sector". I mean - he's right.... but I don't want the world thinking we're not dedicated to our jobs (I work in the evenings and at weekends regulalry).

It's doesn't bother me; everyone is excited about a free day off work. Teachers are generally under thanked and under paid, so I don't begrudge them doing the happy dance for a free day off.

It doesn't bother me. I'm in the south so it rarely snows. I'd celebrate an unexpected day off too, but probably not on FB since I rarely update my status.

Usually I'm confused until I remember my friends are teachers. I'll see the Facebook post "Snow day!!!" and I'm just "WTF are they talking about - who wants to drive in this snow??" and then I realize they don't have to work because of it.

The thing that DOES annoy me though is when my teacher friends assume OTHER people get days off because of the snow! I had a friend try to make plans with me during a storm and I was like "Uhh, dude, I'm at work..." and she was all "You had to work today??? They don't close your office during a storm??" Umm, no - most businesses can't just shut down because of the weather, geeze! THAT annoyed me.

I have a few teacher friends that make posts like this. While I understand everyone loves a day off, it sometimes comes across like they dread working. And maybe sometimes they do, understandable, but you're dealing with children....

Knowing how insanely hard most teachers work, it doesn't bother me. I'd probably be excited, too!

I don't mind the snow day posts that much. However, I have a FB who's a teacher that bugs me by constantly posting about her vacations. It seems like she has a week off practically every month, and then she posts leading up to it saying she can't wait to get a break, then posts during it about how much it sucks when it's almost over, then she complains that she doesn't get another break for X more weeks.

When you only get 2 weeks of vacation a year, it's a little obnoxious to constantly hear about.

It absolutely does not bother me. My husband is a teacher--he only posts things like this in the summer for break, but he deserves that time off. He loves his job, but it's nice to have a break--it's tough work being a teacher.

Also, I get off on days schools close because of weather conditions, so I like that part, too

Not at all. I think that anyone would celebrate a paid day off, and I don't think it's very charitable to assume that they're trying to provoke jealousy. I don't think your union has the right to tell people what to post on facebook, either.

No. I don't begrudge teachers (a.k.a. my mom and sister) their happy snow day posts. It's not like they're actually getting a lot of time off the job with all of the work they do outside of the school, and I think many parts of their job do suck!

It's like being a SAHM mom to a dozen or more kids (at least a few of whom probably have developmental/behavioral issues), with the added joys of bureaucracy and grading papers. Ugh. I'd want snow days too...
