Yes. My ILs got LO a kitchen for Christmas last year. And while I am so grateful because it's an expensive purchase I hate the kitchen. It's so f-ugly. For what they paid there were so many others I would have liked. Had she mentioned she was going to get her a kitchen I would have added a few in different price points to her wish list. Which MIL knew about.

It makes me feel like a ungrateful B but every time I look at it and LO is not playing with it that's what I think!

I don't have a lo yet so I haven't had to deal with this but I will never forget when this happened to a mom I worked for. She had decided that for her daughter's birthday (in Jan.) she was going to buy her the Pottery Barn kitchen. For Christmas she bought her a bunch of accessories and was just over the moon excited. They had decided not to do it for Christmas because they were going to be traveling. The day before they left her mil came over while they were at work and set up an inexpensive plastic kitchen to surprise them.

This poor mom was so incredibly sad. Her husband was adamant that they couldn't get rid of it to buy a nicer one and so they kept it.

I don't see a problem with it. Then again, my inlaws are not that generous so I guess I'm just jealous?

Is this is about more than a tricycle? Sorry to ask if it's a sensitive topic!!

DH's parents get LO (and us) a bunch of things we have no use for, and I feel like it's a waste of money. They haven't gotten her anything I wanted to get her yet, but I think I'd be annoyed if they did and it wasn't what I had in mind. They did get her a chair for her birthday, and yeah it's cute but so random and doesn't match her playroom. My parents on the other hand always ask what they should buy and 9 times out of 10 I just order it for them. Which is nice!

@NaturallyCathy: Yeah, my MIL heard me talking about gifts with DH, and then at a later time, mentioned that she wanted to get LO *exactly* what I was going to get her . . . seriously? You didn't even know what an activity cube/anywhere chair was until you heard about it from me (it's a long story). She ultimately got her other things, but *oy*.

@mrbee: For me, LO is very likely the only child I will have, so I only get one bite at this parenting apple. I would like to be the one to give her her *firsts* to the extent possible!

I don't mind when people buy early but I cannot stand when people buy something for my kids that I told them WE were going to get them. My FMIL tries to do this all the time.

Yes and no. Honestly it would depend on who bought it and what it was.

I have already told my Mom something I would like them to get R for Christmas and she was fine with it. I mentioned a couple things for her birthday, just in conversation, and one my Mom said well maybe they could do that, and I said no, I wanted to get it. She ok, well my maybe Dad can make her a table and chairs, and I said perfect!

I would try to look at it from the perspective of the gifter. To me, the first tricycle is really not that momentus of a gift. And it's not a crazy expensive gift so I don't see it as a big deal. And I'm guessing your in laws weren't trying to steal your thunder or anything, they just thought it would be a good gift so they went ahead and bought it.

Now, alternatively, when my MIL recently said she was going to take M to Disney World for her first visit I pretty much laughed in her face.

My parents and I talk about LO gifts before they do any purchasing. We've seen what my MIL gifts us, so I don't think that they would something like that, but she's unpredictable, so I don't know completely.

I don't get grandparents that overstep boundaries with their adult children and families. Why do they feel the need to steal important moments from their own children for their grandchildren?

I would be happy if my IL's bought my LO a tricycle. That means they actually got him something thoughtful!

My parents tag sale, so my son has a tricycle and a push style bike. They didn't ask me, they bought them and they keep them at their house.

Is that an option for you?

It seems like they can do no right by you though, so it probably doesn't matter.

It wouldnt really bother me because if I plan on getting a different one I would still go ahead and do so. I wanted to get my LO her first bible but then my MIL got one first and it has a nice page in front for writing who it is from etc.. it didnt bother me because its okay to have two bibles or two tricycles in your case,one from grandparents and one from mommy and daddy

This kind of stuff doesnt bug me. Saved me the hassle and expense of buying it myself. Now I can just go pick out something else instead.
