Years ago a lady was telling me a conversation she had with her 5 year old about history Christmas list. The lady was a single parent and the little boy requested among other things an Xbox or some type of game console. She told him that his list was a little expensive and he probably wouldn't be able to get everything he wanted. The boy told his mom not to worry and let Santa get the Xbox. Sweet kid.

Yeah, Santa can't always afford an X-Box!! Santa usually gives a couple of fun gifts in our house.

initially, yes! but we let some things slide as we get closer. a game console would be out of the question though.

Santa only does stockings in our house. That way if/when my kids are comparing notes with others, those kids aren't sad they didn't get as much as mine. (If it goes the other way, it's easy for me to tell my kids that Santa knows we can afford the things they need and want, so he gives more toys to others. I watched some socioeconomic Santa problems develop in my classroom because he'd bring one kid an x-box and one kid socks. I'd rather not be the cause of hurt feelings.

Yes, Santa has a budget, we have a budget too!
My son's birthday is in December too and I've already told him that Santa is going to have to split the cost of what he wants with us and it's going to count as his birthday gift as well. He's almost 5, he took it very well, all things considered!

@T.H.O.U.: Yep, that's what we do. We go to bed with the stockings hung up, and then he can go on a "hunt" for his (now full) stocking in the morning and see what Santa brought. I love the magic of Santa and have no problem doing it, but I also think value of a dollar-wise, and compared to other kiddos, I'd rather most gifts are from us. We do 5 gifts--want, need, learn, read, and then one "family" gift to enjoy together.
And then my parents get him anything he's ever mentioned wanting, so....

Heck yeah Santa has a budget. He's got buy/make gifts for everyone across the world, while paying salaries for an army of elf workers!

I am still unsure on if we will do gifts from Santa. She's 3.5 and we haven't started and I don't intend to this year either. So I'm guessing...no? But if we did, Santa will definitely have a budget! LOL

I read something suggesting a few smaller gifts from Santa and big gifts from parents so some kids at school aren't getting an Xbox from Santa and some a pair of socks.

Definitely. Santa gives just one gift and s stocking, and anything big comes from us. I don't like the entitlement that can develop when Santa gives sooooo much! Want to teach that we give gifts to one another out of love and appreciation, while still embracing a little holiday magic!

Yes. It's usually a small item under $20. LO has received a soccer ball (he specifically asked Santa for that at the mall), Thomas train, and a toy car. Nothing extravagant but still special.

I liked how my parents handled Santa gifts and I hope to do the same with my daughter when she's older. They did some gifts from family members, wrapped and under the tree, and stockings and one gift for each kid from Santa. The stockings usually contained small, fun things--not too expensive. The special gifts were personalized some years--a new doll, a Lego set, etc, and more of a group gift other years--a sled for each of the 3 kids, a used Super Nintendo, etc. Santa didn't bring expensive or extravagant gifts, the excitement of seeing them was more than enough.

Santa has a budget. He brings one big gift that he leaves unwrapped under the tree with a note and he fills the stocking with fun little trinkets, socks, undies, etc.

Everyone has a budget. But I don't see an Xbox being outside the realm of possibilities for a Santa gift as long as I felt it was an age appropriate gift. But our biggest gift was always from Santa when I was growing up. I don't need my kid to give me credit for presents. But Santa doesn't buy cars

@Jess1483: I like the want, need, learn, read idea! We did four gifts last year as well plus the family gift. I may have to change our "wear" category to "learn" this year. That might be more fun for LO.

As a kid I totally thought Santa didn't have a budget so I asked him for all kinds of things I knew my parents couldn't afford! I like the want/need/wear/read idea a lot. Plus I know the grandparents will spoil him so he will get plenty of gifts.
