I have talked about W not talking as much as I would like and iwas just wondering... do you count words like "vroom" (for a car) or animal sounds as "words? "
W has recently had a "descriptive sound" (which is what I'm calling them, lol) explosion but still very few actual "words." It's frustrating 
ETA - I never have considered them words, but DH does.

I would if he associates it with something and its not just babbling 
My lo is 12 months and only has about 3 words that he says very inconsistently if that makes you feel any better

@stargal: he says vroom when playing with a car, choochoo when playing with a train, meow when he "talks" to our cat, he tries to imitate my elephant sound but just kinda spits when he sees an elephant, etc. So yeah, he associates the sounds he's making with the appropriate objects.

Absolutely! It is an onomatopoeia! I have found that ninth graders struggle with this concept, so he is super smart.

How old is he? My son just started having real words in the last few months and he is 2 years old. He could do animal noises at 18 months. So I had to count them.

As a speech therapist, I absolute count animal sounds and sounds like "vroom" etc to be words so long as they are used consistently and in contextually appropriate situations.
@Navy_Mommy: How old is the little guy? Does he babble to you? Is he pointing? Does he try to use joint attention to convey his needs?

@PointeShoesTutus: he's 15 and a half months. He's completely on track in terms of communication I just wish he used more words, lol. He "talks" all day, points to what he wants, listens to "one step commands" from me etc.
He insists that the little bird I made for him says, "roar" not tweet, apart from that the sounds he makes make sense.

@Navy_Mommy: I wouldn't worry about it too much then if he's on track with all that other stuff. What I usually tell parents (and do with my early intervention kiddos) is talk, talk, talk to them. Put what you/he is doing into words. "I'm pushing the train." Mommy's doing the dishes." Use simple syntax and repeat and expand on anything he does say-put the words into his mouth, if you will.
It feels really strange at first to be talking like that (and can be exhausting) but its the most natural way to encourage language development for his age group. You could also try some baby signs with him if you feel like he's getting frustrated if he's not getting his point across. Studies have shown that baby sign does not impede oral language development and can actually encourage it.
*apologies if you've heard all this before. Just wanted to offer a solution since I'd asked about the other aspects of his communication skills
