My mom keeps telling me that my baby won't come early because "it's not in my genes." She has 5 kids and all of them were late, except for one, who came on her due date.
Does when my mom went into labor really dictate when I will? Is going early/late/on time genetic? I'd love to hear the scientific answer to this!

From what I've heard/read, no. I guess if you have a sister, it's more "accurate," but I don't think there's much of a connection between mother/daughter.
That being said, I could be totally and completely wrong...

Haha well my completely unscientific answer is no- I was over two weeks late, but LO came a week and a half early!

It was pretty accurate for me. My Mum went into labour on her due date with me and I went into labour 2 days early with S.

My mom said that my siblings and I were early. DD was induced at 40 weeks 6 days and my water broke with DS at 37 weeks 1 day.... so I say no.

my mom had me a few weeks early, i had LO exactly on time.
but we both had incredibly, incredibly fast labors and deliveries.

my very unscientific answer is no! my mama went the full 2 weeks overdue with me (had to be induced and I STILL didn't wanna come out!), almost the full 2 with my brother who ended up coming naturally, and carried my twin sisters til 38 weeks!
then I had my LO a few days early. we'll see what happens with LO#2 though!

Hopefully with #2, since she went 2 weeks early.
With #1 I was a week early, and she was a week late- so far nope!

Nope! Both my sister and my brother (I don't count because I was a scheduled c) came late. I had DS at 38+5 and it's looking like DD will be at least a little early too.

This is very reassuring news! My mom says I was four weeks late-- I really hope her dates were off or something because that is ridiculous! My siblings were all late too.

For me, it was the same. My mom delivered at 37 and 36 1/2 weeks, water broke both times. With DS my water broke at 36 weeks. One of my OBs said that it's not always true but another said that since I took after her with DS that it will probably happen again with this pregnancy. I have friends that have had almost identical labors as their moms did as well.

Nope. My mom was very early (2 months) with my sister, early with me (3 weeks?), and I delivered my LO 5 days late! Her labors were also faster than mine.

My mom never went into labor either time. Her water broke with me, but she felt no contractions not even pitocin woukd get labor going and had c-sections.
My water had to be broken when I was about 9cm and had a vaginal delivery!

None at all for me...my mom was late with my older sister and ended up with an emergency c section, and had a RCS with me. My water broke at 39w5d and I gave birth 9 hours later.

My mom had 5 kids and the timing was kind of all over-- oldest was late, second was early and nearly born in the car on the way, and I think the rest of us were within the norm of what you would expect? All of her births were pretty easy (as easy as they can be) and she never had any pain drugs, though she was induced with me after her water broke.
My sister went 10 days late with my nephew, had a complicated, long labor resulting in an emergency c-section. I had C 1 day before my due date and had an uncomplicated vaginal delivery. I guess I'm lucky that I took after my mom on that, even though my sister didn't.

No. My mom had me 4 weeks early, my brother were late. But she went into labor with all of is naturally and had vaginally deliveries. I never went into labor on my own, never dilated and had c-sections.

My mom was about 5 days late with me (the oldest) and 2 weeks late with my brother (eeek!), but luckily I managed to have two relatively on-time babies -- one 2 days late and one 2 days early.

I was born 3 weeks early and so was my LO!! My mom is *convinced* they are related, but we asked up and down at the hospital and everyone said no, just a coincidence.

I sure hope not! My mom never went into labor with any of her 3 kids - ended up losing the first one for this reason :'( DD came 1 week early - hopefully my other children will follow suit!

No, my mom was 10 days late delivering me, late delivering my little sister and my older sister was premature. She also had no real complications and very fast deliveries.
All three of my girls were born before their due date, one was 13hr labor, 6hr labor and 4hr labor.
All involved Pre E and inductions.
Nothing like my mothers less than an hour deliveries on her own.

I wonder if mayyyybe this used to be more true before the era of sonograms? Because my mom had crazy long irregular cycles, so her due date was way off based on the standard LMP rules. Her first baby was three weeks late. My cycles are similar to hers, which I imagine could be hereditary, but my due date will be way more accurate thanks to modern methods. I think if I were pregnant in the 70s my baby would also be very "late."

I would guess no. My mom went into labor with my oldest sister late, she thinks by 1-2 weeks and then had scheduled c sections for my other sister and me. I was induced one week early so I can't say personally, but my sister had one baby just about on time, one 2 weeks early, and the last one nearly 2 weeks late!

My mom went into labor on time with me and my brother and had a fairly easy delivery both times . . . I was induced at 38 weeks and had a horrific delivery . . . and would do it all over again in a heartbeat!

My mom went late all 3 times (varying between a few days and 2 weeks) and I went into labor on my own 2 days before DS was due.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Oh, and can I just add that that's such a terrible thing to say to someone who is late in her third trimester!?! The *least* she could say is "I didn't go early, but you never know . . . pregnancy is such a wild card and everybody is different!*
