We were just in California, and apparently you're allowed to to turn right on red there? You can't do that in NYC, unless there's a sign which says you can.

Was wondering how widespread this rule is... is it really only NYC where you can't turn right on red?

In PA some are and some aren't - if there isn't a sign that says "no turn on red" then you can!

I just moved from California to NYC. I had no idea you couldn't turn right on red!!! Oops!
I've lived in lots of states, and this is the first place I've lived where you can't turn right on red.

yep. Unless there is a sign saying you can't. There aren't many of those thought.
Around schools there are signs that say "no right on red from 8am -9am and 2pm-3pm" basically when kids are walking to and from school.

Yep, unless a sign says you can't. We can also turn left on red if the street is a one way.

I thought this was a rule everywhere! Its OK in Washington unless posted otherwise. You can even turn left on a red when going from a one way to one way street.

I know there is no right on red in RI too, found that one out the hard way!
In out state though, you can turn right on red unless there is a sign for that intersection that prohibits it.

I didn't live in the 5 boroughs of NYC so I was always allowed to! I have to very consciously remember this when I am driving in the 5 boroughs!

you can turn right on red in PA unless there's a sign disallowing it.
You can ALSO turn LEFT on red if you're on a one-way street turning on to another one way street.

where i live now yes, but it took some getting used to as i grew up in Montreal, Quebec where it is a big no-no. now when i vist home, i get impatient when i have to wait at red lights to turn right!

In my experience, it's only been NYC where that's a universal rule. In other places, some intersections have the no turn on red sign. But because I lived un NYC, I always hesitate!

Yep. It's convenient, but unfortunately too many people ignore the "after coming to a full stop and verifying it's safe to turn" part of the law.

You can turn after coming to a complete stop. There are a few places you can't, they're marked with a "No Turn on Red" sign.

There's one intersection near us (Toronto) that doesn't allow a right turn on red, but on the whole, you're allowed to!

Ditto to other PA posters! Yes unless otherwise stated (D got a ticket for just this a few days before I gave birth!) and sometimes left on red onto a one-way street.

You can in Michigan, unless there's a sign stating otherwise. If I'm in another state and is not sure, I'll stop at the right light and see if anyone beeps at me for not turning! haha

Like most others, you can unless a sign says you can't. But those signs are at almost every intersection in the city, so it's really only when we leave town that we can.

I'm a civil engineer and do a lot of signal design, and I wasn't aware you weren't allowed to turn right on red in NYC!
We take that into account when doing signal timings.

Here it is determined by the intersection. Usually you can but a sign tends to tell you either way.

You can in AZ unless there's a sign saying not to. There are a few intersections around that you can't (usually because of a curve right before the light & you can't see the 1st lane or something)
