My 7 month old has a mix of breast milk & formula at day care but is breastfed at home. I also give her purees, oatmeal and yogurt. But she till wakes up everynight to nurse. Usually she wakes up around midnight adn then again around 3am, on a good day she will wake up only once to nurse. Isnt she too old to be waking up at night?
My friend says instead of nursing her at bed time I should give her a bottle of formula with added oatmeal flakes, but I dont really want to do that.

Depending on the night it can be 1-5x a night. I'm not convinced formula will make her sttn! m gets 4oz of formula at bedtime and she def does not sttn! My nephew is all formula and does not sttn either. He's just as unpredictable as M. I honestly believe food intake does not dictate night wakings.

@regberadaisy: That makes me feel better, My friend has this theory that formula would make her more full so she would wake up less..

Every baby is different, my daughter is EBF and started sleeping through the night on her own at about 6.5 months. I know some people say formula babies STTN sooner, but I think that's a myth.
I say do what feels right for you. I started to read the No Cry Sleep Solution during her 4 month sleep regression and the best thing I read was essentially to ask yourself if the current situation is really a problem. If it is, take steps to change it, if not, don't sweat it or worry about what others say.

My LO only gets breast milk and 2 meals of solids and she gets up on average 1-2x a night to nurse. When she's teething she's up even more.
@regberadaisy: Ditto. I have a couple of friends who's formula fed babies don't sleep through the night.

My EBF baby has slept through the night since she was 6 weeks old... Believe me, I count my lucky stars every day! Every baby is different. I have plenty of friends with formula fed babies and they didn't STTN until close to a year!

Just so you know, I EBF and at a year I stopped pumping. Since I didn't have much milk at bedtime, we started giving her a bottle of formula at bed to "fill her up". It didn't work and we still had to sleep train to get her to STTN.
I think you are fine as long as you are willing. You can always try to slowly offer less and less at night. My LO totally did it for comfort at the end.

I wish! DS is 5 months next week and has never sttn. He wakes up 3 times a night to nurse, some rare nights it's only 2 and bad nights it can be 4 times. He seems to want to eat every three hours most nights.
My personal theory is that DS is a very active baby (literally never still except when sleeping) and he's also very big for his age so he needs a lot of energy, he burns through the milk in no time. Based on my mum acquaintances it seems the best sleepers are smaller and often less physically active babies, but it's just me searching for an explanation!

Yep, LO has been sleeping through the night since 4 months old. Sometimes when he is sick he will wake for a night feeding.

Nope. She is now waking up 2-3x a night again. We were down to one wake-up.....

for young babies giving formula may help them sleep longer stretches. it takes the body longer to process so they sleep longer stretches than if breastfed. but at your lo's age, the wake-ups are habit.
olive is almost 14 months, breastfed, still not sttn, and i don't think she will until i night wean.

My LO is 4 weeks old and EBF. She wakes up between 1-2 am for a feeding and then again between 4-5. She goes to bed between 9 and 10 pm.

My son is 6 months and is formula fed....has been for like 7 weeks. On occasion he STTN but more often he gets up once to eat.

My LO is five months, EBF, and sleeps through the night for the most part. I think it's just luck of the draw, not anything we did.

We also do a mix of breastmilk and formula. I've tried giving DS formula before bed and it doesn't help him sleep any longer than if we were to just nurse. He is 8 months old and only occasionally sttn. We did start sleep training last night and he only woke up once, which was glorious!

@Mrsbells: I don't believe formula helps either. We did it once when she was a newborn, thought we found the magic potion when she had a 4 hour stretch, and the next night she still ended up waking up after 2-3 hours. Mine wakes up once at night, and i also wonder when i should start to wean her off of nighttime feeds. I know that Dr. Weissbluth says that night feedings usually end around the 9 month mark.
I thought that she would start sleeping better once we started solids but again, it only lasted for a couple of days before she went back to waking up earlier in the night. She is a bit above the 50th percentile in weight, and is fairly active.
Have you started her on any proteins yet? I find that when she has protein for dinner, she will wake up at 4am, as opposed to 1am!

My DD is 3 months old and has been all over the place. She is currently waking up only once a night around 2-4am, but last week she was waking up 3x a night...I think it just depends and varies baby to baby.

DS (11w) is EBF and only wakes up once to nurse during the night (DD was the same and I realize how luck I am). Is your LO nursing for food or comfort during the wake-ups? If it is for comfort then giving her formula before bed isn't going to make a difference.

@caffeinated: I havent introduced proteins yet so I will have to see how that goes... but I had the same experience with solids; she would sleep better for a day or two and then she's back to waking up everynight -
@caffeinated: I'm looking at the 9 month mark for night weaning. My son is on the small side so I think if he wants to eat once a night at this point, so be it. For this reason, our ped said if we could hold off on sleep training til 9 months, would be great

LO started STTN (8+hours) at 8 weeks. Then she stopped around 5 months. She's woken up almost every night since then, and she eats a lot
I don't think it's related to food anymore. Sometimes it's to nurse and sometimes she just wakes up. I nurse her anyway because it's easier to get her back to sleep
