My 3.5 yo has a lot of ear wax! If I don't clean her ear every third day or so it will be oily, yellow, gross and leaking out of her ear. I use these q tips that are made for babies. There's a tiny tip then a bulb so it can't go in too far. I think at her next wellness appointment I'm going to ask the ped to do a cleaning.

Our pediatrician told us to only clean around the outside-- so I don't know! He's checked her ears at each appointment and has cleaned them once or twice.
Mine is only 2-- so we may start doing them on our own soon! I just realized yours is older!

@Mrs. Pink: yup, the q tip we use doesn't let you go inside the ear. She's 3.5 and I don't trust myself to do it properly.

She has some but it's the dry, crusty type so I just leave it alone and the Ped gets it out during random visits.

yes so much! The pedi has recommended debrox, I think it's called--but it's impossible to actually put that in LO's ear (it's like a foaming drop that helps flush the wax out).

Mine doesn't have too much. I just wash it out with a washcloth in the bath. My Ped said not to use the baby qtips.

@regberadaisy: I managed to do it once, and I didn't see a lot of improvement, but reviews said that it might take 2 or 3 times. I haven't been able to get the energy to do it again--it was pretty torturous for LO.

Yes, we make sure to get lots of water in his ears at shower time to help rinse it regularly

@pastemoo: oh really? I was wondering if that was part of our problem. She has no issues with water over her face during bath so I'm sure lots get in.

Both girls have had A LOT. We just use baby soap and warm water with a wash cloth and it usually falls out on its own for the most part. Every ped appt, our doctor has to scrape their ears clean. E's was entirely plugged up last time (the ped thought she had tubes or that she stuffed something into her ear
)

Both my boys have tons of earwax. Our ped always recommends for us to do baby oil drops in their ears to draw the wax out. Works well, you just have to do it regularly.

Hahah not yet, but our dr said apparently people of asian decent seem to have more ear wax!

I clean/scrape out DS's ear wax every other week with the Asian ear scratcher/remover. It's so gross when I pull out huge chunks at a time. *shudders*

@snowjewelz: Is that true?? We're an Asian family, and I also use the scraper like @Alivoo01. I know we're not "supposed" to, but I grew up with it, and I even do it for DH.
DS is 9mo, and he becomes *absolutely* still when I do it to him while he's sitting on my lap. I think he likes it!

@ineebee: DH scrapes too, haha! I don't know if it's true, that's what he said! He used to practice where there were tons of Asian people so I guess I believe him? Haha!

Our ped had us use some ear wax softening drops, so that's what we used with E. It took WEEKS to really work, though. And then we went back another day and another pediatrician used a special tool with a light on the end to pull out some of the hard chunks. Ugh, gross. I think she had a problem, though, because once she got her tubes put in, the gunk stopped and her ears seemed to be able to drain/dry out properly.

@regberadaisy: my MIL suggested a mix of half water half peroxide (boy he hates that)... But the last thing I saw in there was a rock, not wax. Water works well once the baseline us normal for him but everyone is different I guess!
