I hate sand but I see how much my LO enjoys the sandbox at daycare. I'm thinking about buying one of those turtles or crabs for our backyard.

He's got one at my parents house. He used to love it, but now he's worried about bugs in there. My 3 year old niece loves it, though.

My mom got her one for her birthday at Garden Ridge. She doesn't seem too care for the sand - she just wants to climb in and out of the thing.

We have a sand and water table where you stand and play. I actually prefer those since it's a little less messy and grows better with the LOs. Oh, and we filled the whole thing with sand since they just kept dumping the sand in the water portion and it was a mess. http://www.amazon.com/Step2-Naturally-Playful-Water-Center/dp/B001PGTNK6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366297882&sr=8-1&keywords=sand+and+water+table

@T-Mom: I wanted to get LO a sand and water table, but wondered about the water and sand mixing, what a good idea! How old was your LO when they started using the sand table?

I am too freaked out about bugs/othergrossthings camping out in the sandbox!

@Bao: We got DD that table for her 1st bday, and had it set up for her party. She loved it, and all the kids were playing with it! DS is 19 months and plays with it a lot now. It's the perfect height for him.
@CottonCandy: most of the sand boxes have lids that you put on after use to keep the sand dry, so we've never had any problems with bugs!

We have the turtle. We're going to use it as a pool for now though. DS isn't old enough for sand yet.

Our sandbox is 12'x12'. I am pretty sure that Ellie could start her own country in there if she found some residents who didn't mind getting sand in awkwardly uncomfortable places. We love it. And it's right by a water pump so Ellie loves to hook up the hose and flood it sometimes, or fill a bucket with water and then use a watering can to get the water where she wants it. Lorelei got to go in it once before winter came back. She thought it was great!

@autumnlove-If you don't like sand, there are other great alternatives. You can try it out with bird seeds, rice, corn (any type of grain, and beans for great textural/sensory experience. Also, coco shell for the lovely scent.
