Xander (14m) acts like I'm trying to cut off his whole finger when I'm trying to clip his nails! Which is why I hadn't done it in a while... But his eczema has been acting up, so he was scratching and essentially cutting himself, so I knew it had to be done! I ended up having to sit on him to hold him down and just hold his hand in a death grip while I clipped them, the entire time he's screaming like I'm murdering him!!!
How are your kids with getting their fingernails or toenails clipped?

Yep, I do his toes every 3 to 4 weeks. His nails usually every 1.5 weeks. After bath time, either while changing into jammies or during storytime.

No! I can't get them when she's awake because her hands are always moving, and I can't get them when she's asleep because I'm too scared of waking her up. I usually try to clip one or two nails per day on sort of a rotation, but she usually has at least a few nails in desperate need of clipping.

@Adira: Have you tried biting his nails?
I know it sounds gross but I accidently cut her once and vowed never again to use clippers. It's easy peasy to grab her hand and do it.

@Adira: For the most part. He's never really fussed too much. Sometimes it took both DH and I... but the first year I usually did it when we were nursing. Now we just distract with him books or small toys. And he stops fussing.

@mrsjyw: I used to do it nursing too! But now that we've weaned, I don't have any good opportunities to cut them and he freaks out whenever I try! Gahhh!

We used to have to cut her nails as a team. DH to hold her arms and hands steady and me to cut. But since she's older now (2) she lets me do it and thinks it's fun. I cut my nails in front of her so she wants to do everything I do and tells me to cut hers.

She hates it. Every once in a blue moon she will sit and drink her milk and lets me do it. But usually I hold her down and get maybe 2 nails done at a time cause she wiggles so much I am afraid I am going to cut her.

@Adira: LO has never really complained. I noticed though that singing a song to him while clipping them helps him relax.

This is the only time (other than when I'm sick) when DD is guaranteed to get cartoons. I turn on Daniel Tiger and sit her in my lap. She sits perfectly still until the last nail or two.

@Adira: DH does it, but he also lays on LO (while LO is laying on his back on the ground) to keep him still. He is used to their routine by now (it's a weekly event usually) so he doesn't scream anymore.

my LO has never liked it until we appealed to her vanity. around 16 months we introduced the concept of "pretty". Let's tie your hair so it will be pretty! let's wear these shoes because they're so pretty. Let's clip your nails so they will be pretty. Now she loves it. will let me clip all 10 fingernails and 10 toenails to make her "pretty".

I try to distract him. Let him watch tv or give him something to play with that he normally would be allowed to play with (baby monitor, my phone, etc). He does ok..

My 2 year old just sits there while I clip his nails. The 9.5 month old...Jesus, you'd think I was killing her. Sometimes it takes a few days to finish clipping her nails.

He doesn't care...if anything he wants to "help" and tries to take the nail clippers. Now my oldest? Up until he started cutting his own nails {he's 12} he would scream bloody murder!

Ours freaks out, too. I did her toes upside down, mission impossible style while she slept in the crib with her feet hanging out. If we want to do her fingers, we have to pretty much hold her very still and ti takes two people and she SCREAMS. I have her body and pinch her fingers with my fingers so she CANNOT move. She does not like being restrained that firmly. But you do what you gotta do she draws blood, so it's gotta happen!

The daycare lady does LO's fingernails. She swears LO's nails are the easiest to clip but I cannot get more than 2 nails done at a time. ::Hangs head in shame::

she'll usually just sit in my lap and let me cut them. sometimes she'll try to pull her hand away, but then i tell her "i have just a few more and then you're all done!" and she'll let me do it.

She is SO good! I was just thinking this earlier. She's 8 months & does try to grab the Clippers with her other hand but is usually pretty sacked into Watchung me cut them. Weirdly, I've never needed to cut her toenails...

My LO (almost 12 months) does not like it when I hold his hands till to cut his nails ( I use nail scissors) but he doesn't scream or cry. I usually do it right before or after nap while he is still a little drowsy. Like @Pumuckl, singing helps to distract. But I'm sure it will get harder as he gets a bit older!
I do swear by the nail scissors, they are way easier then clippers and I don't feel like I'm about to cut this skin at any moment.

My 5 yr old is fine with me cutting them but DS HATES it. The boy never stops squirming when I hold his hands still, even when he's sleeping, lol

My 3 year old hates it, but I can't blame him. He has two fingers that are affected by his eczema, and it hurts to cut the fingernail. The baby tolerates and doesn't mind.

He hates it and the toes are definitely a two person job.
Maybe next time I'll try letting him watch a cartoon while I do it.
I usually put it off as long as possible since I hate the battle.
