My little guy is 6 weeks old and we still use the "soothie" type that you get from the hospital. We don't typically use it to get him to sleep because we don't want him to become dependent on it to sleep. I use it to calm him down before a feeding, or after when he thinks he needs more food (he doesn't! I see a LC and he is getting plenty of food, my supply is very high) or his father uses it when I'm not readily available to feed him. I have no problem using a pacifier, they won't go to college with them! If he found his thumb, though, that'd be awesome! My niece found her thumb very early and it was the best for everyone -- she is four now and doesn't use it unless she is scared, so again they don't go to college sucking their thumbs!

My daughter never liked them. She always spit them out and wanted nothing to do with them. It really surprised me since every other baby I've spent time with loved them! Like Mrs. Bee said, it was one less habit to break, so it worked out fine, but there were definitely a few times I wished she would take one just to help calm her without nursing when she was little.

Jack didn't start using a pacifier until he was 7-8 months old. He could just never keep it in but now he loves it. We only let him have it during naps and at night. I am planning to break the habit before he is 2.

Max never took to a pacifier. He found his thumb early on and is still pretty tied to it, especially when he's tired. I'm not worried about it yet (he's 13 months) but I hope it's not too hard to break him of the habit later on.
