My 12 month old still wakes up once a night every night to eat. I have half heartedly tried night weaning her by sending my husband in to her, going in myself but not feeding her, and trying to just slowly shorten the length of the feeding. Nothing works. If I don't give her a full feeding she is hysterical. I have just accepted it. EVERYONE in our lives is giving us such a hard time about this. The advice on how to "fix it" ranges from mildly annoying to downright maddening. So when we had her one year appointment on Friday I told her pediatrician that she's still nursing at night and I'm just totally failing at weaning her (I was almost apologetic in my delivery). His response surprised me so much!! He basically told me my child is so small (15th percentile) and so BUSY BUSY BUSY (aka burning so many calories) that it's simply unrealistic for me to expect her to go 12 hours straight without eating and that for her to sleep 12 hours (6:30-6:30 most nights) with one wake up to eat is pretty darn good and I should just keep on doing what I'm doing. It was SUCH a relief to hear him validate our decision to "give in" to her need to eat during the night.
Has your pediatrican ever pleasantly surprised you? Or unpleasantly?
my pediatrician! I have from day one. I really respect him and feel like he respects us. Even when we disagree, I like the way he talks to us and how well he explains things to us.
