Not sure if it's just a TX thing or not, but I don't think I could live without them!
Frontage roads are roads that run along side the highways. I love it because, if there's a lot of traffic on the highway, I just drive on the feeder and can usually get to where I need to in a reasonable time.

When we first moved here I found them SOO scary, but now I get them and they are awfully convenient sometimes (took one today instead of Beltway 8!)

Only in some places. Not in this county, but I have seen them along the highways in other areas of SC.

If there's lots of traffic, wouldn't more people go on the frontage road to try to go and jam that up too? We don't have them, but I don't think they would work anyways. Side streets and everything off the highways here already get jammed up as well as the highways if there's a lot of traffic.

I haven't seen them too many other places other than here. My DH hates them. He thinks they are really ugly (I agree). But they really come in handy!

@BabyBoecksMom: I had to drop a friend off at the airport and we haven't gotten the EZ Pass for our new car yet. Otherwise I would have done the tolls all the way home.

Not really. We have a few parallel highways though (ex, Rt. 6 and rt. 6a). The "a" highway is more residential but runs generally the same route as the big highway. We also have a service road that is largely empty save for a few residential neighborhoods. This is the road that I take to work if there is traffic on the highway or if the weather conditions are poor (the highway I travel has terrible drainage in the rain).

@PurplePumps: @runnerd: You'd be surprised at how many people still get onto the highway, even when it's jammed. But, the feeder/frontage roads are usually 2-3 lanes wide, so they help to keep the traffic moving.

We don't have then in NC or OH. When I traveled to TX, I thought they were so strange!

@MamaBehr: Hah! I do that sometimes... Beltway 8 traffic is horrible! Not as bad as 610...but still not pleasant.

...and there are some places on 610 where you can get off onto the feeder and then get right back on, thus bypassing traffic and still avoiding lights, (like the post oak exit, I believe). On a related note, when I moved here I kept seeing the signs for Frontage Road and I thought, "Man that road is everywhere!" LOL

I'd never heard of them before I moved to TX from WI 5 years ago. It took me a while to get used to them, but I have to admit they're pretty convenient sometims (except when you pass the place you meant to go and have to do an epic loop to get back to that spot)
Funny story though, when we visit my fam in WI, DH tries to get on the "feeder road" which is really an entrance ramp to the freeway all the time.

We have what we call service roads and they run along side major highways around the city (but not always). They are usually only one lane in each direction and they have traffic lights because they are adjacent to communities normally so they aren't faster unless the highway is majorly jammed. It does help when you are forced off the highway and they don't put up detour signs-- no one wants to drive aimlessly around Detroit at midnight on a Saturday.

No, I don't believe any of the streets parallel to the major highways would count since they do not have on or off ramps or easements.
This does kind of sound like Roosevelt Blvd in Philly though.
