My 2.5 year old is a very good speaker but she still babbles from time to time. Sometimes it's elaborate babbling paragraphs, sometimes I think she babbles in Spanish and sometimes I think she's just playing with language (rhyming, cadence, rhythm). Does your toddler do this?
I thought it would go away once she mastered language.

@bluestriped bee: I just think it's so weird that she babbles so much when she is very very fluent in whatever she wants to say?!

DD only babbles when she's very tired or worked up. I think it's a comfort technique?

my 3 year old still babbles when he's tongue tied or really upset sometimes. i'm with honeybee...i think it's a comfort technique. he also sometimes babbles just for fun, though.

Well, I'm 22 and I still babble! It's my way of grumpily talking to myself and taking out my frustrations without having to actually verbalize them and think them out. My husband says he can sometimes tell what I'm babbling about by the cadence or tone, even though there are no decipherable words.
I don't do it often, only if I'm really tired or if my mind is trying to work out a problem.

My son still says this same ridiculous phrase like "bucka bucka (bucka..etc) bow!" over and over 
He's only 17 months so not exactly fluent but has a pretty impressive vocabulary.. he's been saying that forever though, maybe he just likes the way it sounds DH and I probably encourage it because we think it's hilarious and we'll babble right back at him.

I was thinking about this last night! When she babbled I first thought, Ahhhh!! Preschool is making her regress!! I never realized it would be normal to go back once in awhile. Thanks for posting.

@808love: I don't know what it's all about, but she continues to grow her vocabulary and her complexity... all the while babbling at points throughout the day.
Another weird thing is that she'll say things in different ways, like she'll say "water" with a British accent at times. Or sometimes she'll talk the way her friends do (saying words in their own particular toddler style... so like if a friend says Lellow instead of yellow, she'll say that and then say "like (friend) says".

@Mrs. Jacks: That's so interesting! I have a video of LO doing a British accent while pouring a cup of (pretend) tea. She even said "Here you go, my dear." It's so amazing how they pick that up! Though we've never said that before.
Btw, speaking of toddlers/Spanish... I wonders sometimes if she's talking spanish, though all we do is watch Dora, no other reinforcement. LO caught on the concept of left and right only because of the way izquierda and derecha (sp?) was presented first in Spanish. She could answer correctly in spanish and not in english, so I made the bridge and she gets in 80% of the time when putting on her shoes now.

My DD used babble language as recently as 3, and even as a 4 yr old pre schooler now, she will baby talk. I think the baby talk is to try and be cute. But the babbling was probably just experimentation with sounds. Some of her favorite babble words were "don-ka", and "wha-la"

@travelgirl1: no, no. I wish! The toddler program at Montessori is dual language and so she understands a fair amount and speaks a little. Maybe the babbling is part of her trying to process what she's learning?
