We have two dogs, strictly indoor, and they bark a LOT. We've talked to the vet and a trainer, and the consensus is that we might be able to get them to cut back some, but they'll always bark. It's just a territorial-ness issue and probably not going to ever get 100% better. So I'm obviously a little concerned about how that could wind up effecting the baby's ability to sleep. One nanny job I had, the dogs barked a ton and baby never flinched. I think they disturbed her all of once when I was working there. But is that pretty typical? Do they get used to it, since they hear it from day one (or earlier, through the womb)? I know every kid is different, but I'm curious about others' experiences.

Not exactly the same situation, as we don't have dogs, but MIL has one and LO is not disturbed at all by her barking!

We don't have a barker but dd doesn't wake to any of the dogs noises.

I read that if they bark a lot while LO is inside you, the baby will be used to it and the dogs won't disturb them. I think it must be true cause ds can sleep through everything and we had a barky dog when he was little.

I have a barky inside dog who barks pretty much non-stop from 2-3:30pm because our mailman parks his truck in front of our house to do his route and then the school bus drops off on our corner. I've worked lo's 2 naps to avoid that time because he will occasionally be woken up by the barking but it's not often. Now we're in transition to drop to one nap from 1:30-3:30 and I pretty much just hang out in the bedroom with the dog so she's quiet.

My dog isn't a huge barker, but my LO is 22 months and he still startles when our dog barks. We've always joked that he (my LO) has sonar hearing because he can hear the most minute sounds. I would be more concerned if my LO didn't react at all to the dog's barking. We do use white noise for naps and nighttime.

What @Dandelion: said has been true for us. 99% of the time barking doesn't phase C at all, but he's used to barking since I worked around barking dogs all day too while pregnant.
The only time it hasn't worked its when he was already fighting sleep and the dog barked.
Another thing to consider is citronella collars, my boss and several clients have had great success with them. It takes time and regular use, but I'm a believer.

@Torchwood: Lol. I just YELLED at my dog because she was about 1 cm from my sons face as he snored away in his bouncy seat, only to look up and see your post (he flinched and went right back to sleep as our pooch sniffed his face). I think it's all about getting babies exposed to as much as early as possible. We have made a point to not keep our house completely quiet when LO is sleeping so that he won't wake up at the slightest sound. He's 3 months old and so far has slept through barking, dropping pots and pans, parties, TV, etc.

Mine sleeps through it most of the time but he has a tricky time one hour into nap and if the dogs go badly then we are screwed

UPS has some sort of nap radar and only delivers while LO is napping. The dogs go crazy every time but LO never flinches. It's pretty crazy what this kid can sleep through.

Generally, DS isn't woken up by the dogs and barking. A couple of times during a nap, he has. But at night, never. He was born used to their noise, I guess.

Madeline sleeps through the barking!

My 10 week old sleeps through the barking and through DH yelling at the dog to be quiet. Unless she is already fighting sleep, we don't typically have an issue.
