I'm in shock. I really thought this was going to be a dull season. I'm sorry it happened but it is probably historically accurate...!

Good Lord. Cried like a baby through 90% of the episode. So so so sad.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: true on the historical accuracy...dang, i can't blame cora for being so angry!
GOLD / nectarine / 2884 posts
@Mrs. Cowgirl: No not at all, I'm pumped about Cora getting some righteous anger airtime. She was kinda fading out of the show. I thought she did an amazing job during the scene. It was a lot more....graphic!....than I expected and Cora and Tom did such a great job. Edith and Mary just standing there looking like whaaaa?

There should be a warning for pregnant women watching that episode!!! That was intense and so so sad. I was getting so mad watching. Really well done but so sad.

That episode was completely terrifying for me, and I actually wish I hadn't watched it, even though I'm a huge Downton fan. Pre-E is NOTHING to take lightly!!
As a two-time Pre-E survivor, it hit way to close to home. I was ugly-cry sobbing thru the majority of the episode, as soon as they started talking about toxemia I knew it wasn't going to end well. When Sybil was hitting her head I had flashbacks of what happened to me 15 months ago. This is bringing up horrible memories, and I just want to go snuggle my two boys and sob.
I really wish they had included a link to the Preeclampsia Foundation...

@Foodnerd81: agreed! When I saw it I told DH pregnant women should not watch this show, between Cora's miscarriage in the previous season and now this.
I wanted to see that dr die!!

@Katm558: I was close to tears myself, the scene was very affecting. I can't imagine what it would be like to watch it from your perspective!
I wonder what they meant by the proportion method of feeding the baby (honey/OJ/etc.) I'd love them to talk more about that!

I just finished watching and am sad they did this to her ! She was the best of the sisters and I feel terrible for her poor baby and branson.

this season has been so emotional so far!
as an adoptive momma, i was not prepared to see ethel hand her son over to the baby daddy's parents...i cried so much seeing that and thinking about her bravery and selflessness and of course, thinking about lil' CB's birthmomma, too.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@ladyfingers: Yeah, I was yelling at the doctor, and explaining all the symptoms of pre-e to DH amid tears. And holding my belly like that helped. And I saw the one with Cora's miscarriage in the very early days of my pregnancy (we just got caught up watching DVDs recently).
@Katm558: I can't imagine having gone through it and then watching it without warning. I do feel like they needed a disclaimer at the beginning, like when they warn about mature language or violence. I guess it could have given away the ending but still.

Oh my goodness. I am so mad at Lord Grantham - just worrying about impressing that fancy doctor! He is endearing but he is such a buffoon.
GOLD / nectarine / 2884 posts
@Mrs. Cowgirl: that was so heart wrenching! I'm a little peeved that this opportunity for honest work came up....just AFTER she really needed it. But again, theres no way he would have all the opportunities he will have if he stayed with her, even if she were a maid. I hope and feel they are able to figure something out so she can see him grow up.

She was my favourite character. So sad. And yeah, the bit with Ethel was awful too.

Has anyone else heard that they have cut the US episodes short for fear that our short attention span can't handle it? I feel that this episode especially moved way too quickly and I feel like they are cutting transition material out (although I heard its mostly commercials they cut)?
cantaloupe / 6669 posts
@T-Mom: I actually read something on Slate.com that kind of said the opposite... that there are extra scenes for the American audience? Either way, it is definitely edited differently.

just wait until you see the season finale. sad cries for sure. both DH and I kinda don't like the show now because they know just how to break our hearts ... but we'll still watch the next season of course
GOLD / nectarine / 2884 posts
Y'all, today I kinda woke up sad and I was like, what is up with me? Then I remembered, oh yeah, they killed off Sybil!
GOLD / nectarine / 2884 posts
@softcream: you have piqued my interest. DH (who hates the show yet somehow still manages to catch every episode) and I are making some predictions:
Either Matthew n Mary OR Lord/Lady will be divorced.
Matthew/Mary infertility seems inevitable at this point...
I think Edith will move to London, get out of DA entirely. Maybe move to America?
DH thinks Edith and Tom are going to shack up. Maybe to raise the baby? Seems silly if you ask me.
@T-Mom: I have heard the cuts are to fit into Masterpiece timeslot but that this year it hasnt been an issue. I watched Series 1 & 2 on Hulu/NF so I haven't seen the old edited versions.

@Mrs. Cowgirl: That scene was so heartwrenching. It has got to be so hard to give up a baby willingly; but to have been basically forced to do so like Ethel (and so many other women)? Makes me want to cry just thinking about it! Sometimes the “good old days” were definitely not that good.
honeydew / 7235 posts
OMG it was so sad! i didn't see that coming at all...
unfortunately i read a major spoiler about how this season ends (accidentally on FB, ugh) - and cannot believe it.... so don't click on anything downton related online!
pomegranate / 3729 posts
@Mrs. Sketchbook: I was thinking that Tom and Edith will shack up, too.
honeydew / 7488 posts
@hellobeeboston: ugh me too! I wasn't even looking for spoilers, I was just trying to get some info about their editing practices and stumbled across a major casting change and now I'm so depressed that I don't even know if I can continue watching it any more (but I'm sure I will muster the courage, haha).
@Mrs. Sketchbook: I watched the first 2 seasons on netflix/hulu as well, and I didn't realize that those weren't edited, so that makes me happy!

Just watched the episode this morning and UGLY cried. Oh I can't believe they killed Sybil off. She didn't even get to name the baby! It was too sad, even though I know it's historically accurate.
Now I'm worried about the end of the season What else can they do to break my heart?
blogger / nectarine / 2687 posts
@yoursilverlining: i know! so sad...the baby daddy and his dad were total jerks.
does anyone else think matthew and mary might end up raising the baby?
pomelo / 5257 posts
This episode made me so mad, she is one of my favorite characters! Like I'm sure a lot of you did, I totally called it early, when they were talking about her swollen ankles and all. Plus they were just so over the top with all the "she's SO HEALTHY" stuff that I was like, "Oh crap, she's gonna die." DH was totally crying with me, lol, he pulled up the hood on his sweatshirt to try to hide but I knew what was going on!
@Mrs. Cowgirl: I said the same thing about Matthew and Mary! I guess it just depends on what happens with Tom.
Oh also, unrelated to this drama, but the whole weird thing with Thomas and that new guy is starting to annoy me. Last episode, DH was like, "Thomas has the worst gaydar ever..." haha
GOLD / nectarine / 2884 posts
@hellobeeboston: @T-Mom: I also read the same thing and have not whispered a word of it, then my mom mentioned it on facebook today I'm like whaa mom?? Some people are still innocent! I am still interested to see how they get to the point that they are going to get to, if that makes sense.
@Mrs. Cowgirl: If Baby Branson were a boy it would make perfect sense; I think that was common practice at one point for people who needed an heir to adopt a cousin? I think that is what happened to Jane Austen's brother, come to think of it. Maybe they'll find a way to get DA out of the entailment and then Baby Bronson can become the heiress.
@MrsSCB: You know they keep on playing games with Thomas....is he a villain or sympathetic? I never can tell!
honeydew / 7235 posts
@Mrs. Sketchbook: oh no! i hope your mom took it down! yeah - i'm really interested to see how they get there too.
persimmon / 1408 posts
I had the same thought about Mary and Matthew raising the baby... May make sense if they are going to make them have fertility problems.
Agreed on Thomas, I'm tired of good guy/bad guy routine with Ms OBrien.
cherry / 161 posts
Has anyone realized that Tom is now stuck at Downton with a family who doesn't understand/respect/listen to him, with constant reminders of Sybil, and a newborn? His main support and ally was Sybil and now she's gone! Although I've never been a huge Branson fan, this makes for quite the interesting story line.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
I'm so tired of the Thomas/O'Brien thing. I know you need someone to dislike, but I'm sick of them.
@Katm558: Yeah, I was thinking that really, really sucks for Tom. He's got nowhere to go, how's he going to raise this baby, he hates being at Downton. And now no Sybil.
@CarrieLouWho: "She didn't even get to name the baby! "-- that's exactly what I said to DH last night! The poor baby doesn't even have a name yet.
BTW I'm barely skimming over responses even alluding to spoilers at the end of the season-- I've had too many shows spoiled!

Omg I just watched this. So freaking sad. I'm not a crier at TV shows but this one really got to me. Esp the part when Sybil had just died and the baby starts crying and when Mary said that this is the last time all three of us will be together in this life. I'm going to be depressed all day.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
I've watched the entire season online. SO FREAKING GOOD THIA SEASON
GOLD / apricot / 315 posts
@ladyfingers: agreed! My husband actually said afterwards, "I'm so glad you're not pregnant anymore... I don't know if I could have watched that". We started to watch Call the Midwife while I was still pregnant, and he couldn't handle it because of everything they showed going wrong.
I also agree with the general consensus that Lord Grantham is a moron. Let's see... so far, he has had an almost-affair with a maid, bankrupted the estate, totally ruined Edith's chances for happiness, and now made disastrous decisions that ended in his daughter's death just because he wanted to side with the doctor with the fancier title.
