I'm going to a wedding with a huge gap. Ceremony at 11am at a church and the reception starts at 5pm at a country club type venue. I have no clue what the official dress code is for the reception but I presume "generally formal." I've never been to a split wedding like this. Can I wear the same dress to the ceremony as the reception or am I going to have to change? This is an out of town wedding and I want to just bring a carry-on so the less I have to pack the better.

I don't see why not? If it were me I would probably go back to the hotel post ceremony and change into Comfy clothes. go have lunch, relax then shower and change back into the dress for the reception.

I guess it depends...I wouldn't want to wear a super formal dress (I"m picturing all glammed up) to a church at 11am...you could always wear the same dress but just go light on accessories/makeup. If it's a cocktail dress you're probably fine to wear the same one.

This kind of gap is very common in my circles. Most people just wear the same thing. You certainly could change if it was uncomfortable or something but most people don't bother.

Really common for catholic weddings around here. If the reception is very formal, I wear a church dress to the ceremony then change. I almost always wear the same dress to both, though

That's pretty much how all weddings are here! That way you can do the pictures in between the ceremony and reception. That's how our wedding was in fact!
I always wear the same outfit to both, but I get a little more glammed up for the reception!
