My favorite is Dress Barn! They are always reasonably priced, and really cute!

I'm usually all over the place with where I buy dresses, but a friend of mine swears by Rent the Runway for special occasions like weddings (as a guest, not bridesmaid). Her recent really gorgeous dress has convinced me to try it.

I've always had the best luck finding special occasion dresses at consignment stores. I also like Kohls or Macy's or TJ Maxx.

I second Rent the Runway if it's a fancy event/special event/"worth it" event. LOVE it.

The Limited--they always have nice looking dresses, and if you can find them on clearance they are super cheap!

usually department stores like nordstroms, bloomingdales, and macy's, though i usually have the most luck at nordstroms because they have the biggest online selection.
i would also check out modcloth, anthropologie, j crew, zara, asos and topshop!

Although I usually buy them at dept stores like Nordstrom's, my last dress was from Target! I got it for less than $20 and everyone complimented it and thought it was way more expensive than it was. Score!

Some great recommendations, some I've never heard of!
@Foodnerd81 & @ms.janedoe: So I have just been browsing RTR, what a great site! What happens if you get the dress the day before you event and it doesn't work out? Has that happened to you?

I have heard some horror stories about Rent the Runway, like the dress they rented comes back ripped and they don't inform the person who has it rented next until it's way too late to do anything. I can't handle that kind of anxiety for special events.
I also like department stores for special occasion dresses, or JCrew. I know my size and I usually just need the stuff shortened.

Agree with Nordstrom, but for (much) cheaper, Macy's usually has a giant (disorganized) dress section, and if you're willing to troll the sale racks, you can sometimes find amazing deals.

No kidding about Macy's. I never have patience to dig and neither does LO. Nordstrom is usually good to me, but I wasn't seeing much of anything I liked (at least not for a reasonable price) when I looked the other day.

Since I have about 500000 dresses for church I usually like to go to tjmaxx or Ross for my maxi dresses, nordstroms or anthro for cuter ones and department stores if I want something really fancy. But I stopped being fancy after prom.
