It seems like sleepers are the go-to for newborns. What if you have a newborn in the summer? What do you dress them in? We do have a/c but we live in an area with hot summers. Do we dress her in long sleeve onesies and cover her legs with a blanket? Am I over-analyzing this?

I just put her in onesies. Sometimes I just had her in a tshirt and diaper if.we.were just hanging around the house. I had lo in July in Florida so it was pretty hot!

We did just onesies, or there are rompers that have short sleeves (or no sleeves) and button at the crotch but also have little shorts. RJ pretty much lived in those!

Okay, so it sounds like short sleeves/open legs are okay for a newborn? My MIL was here this weekend and she kept telling me I have to keep a baby under 2 months covered up.

@mediagirl: I go by the rule to dress in the same amount of layers as baby. If I feel hot, I assume he is hot as well... same for cold. Babies don't need much more layers than adults. In the summers a short sleeved onesie and a swaddling blanket is more than ok unless you've got the AC totally blasting.
I did keep a hat on RJ's head 24/7 since babies lose most of the heat thru their heads.

@mediagirl: in the hospital we kept her covered but at home I didn't want her to get too hot. You could.always ask.the nurse at the hospital, that way if your mil bugs you about it you can tell her you're following doctor's orders.

@artbee: lol good call. The good thing is MIL lives far away so she won't be around much. She just had me freaking out some. Makes me glad she's not nearby... I like to figure this out on my own, not have people tell me what to do!
@tina: thank you, I like that rule! Why would my baby need to be in a snowsuit if I'm in a swimsuit??

Come to think of it, RJ was a newborn in the dead of one of the coldest winters ever here in New England, and most days I had him in either a long or short sleeved onesie, miracle blanket, hat, and usually one more blanket layered on top of the miracle blanket while he was sleeping. Our thermostat is always set to 68 in the winter and 72 in the summer.

@mediagirl: they mean well ... but it's so annoying! I once had a stranger tell me my lo was cold. I wanted to slap him, she was fine! She tells me when she's not fine. People need to let parents make their own decisions about raising their kids. If I'm not hurting anyone, it's none of their business.

I always teach my NICU parents to dress the baby in one layer more than what you want to be wearing, so if you wish you were naked, a diaper and a t-shirt is more than enough, if you are in jeans and a long sleeved shirt, a onesie, pants, and a hat is probably your best bet. Some babies are naturally really hot though, so it isn't a bad idea to check the babies temperature every once in a while to make sure you aren't over dressing them (I have never actually seen a parent under dress a baby, everyone errs on the side of overdressing usually!)

Definitely what Tina said about them being in the same amount of layers as you. Baby Y was a late June baby and our top floor is always on the warm side, so he was usually in a onesie, or at most a thin cotton sleeper, with a thin muslin blanket for swaddling. Same for going out.

the general rule is what MsMini said (and what pediatricians have always told me)... just 1 layer more than you. for our summer newborn she was in a onesie and a swaddle (summer swaddleme or A&A blanket) mostly.

You can get really lightweight sleepers, carters has some without feet so you can add separate lightweight socks.
I'd also try some gowns, those seem to be more suited for summer, IMO.
