my doors autolock once you start driving, but i've been driving my mom's car this week and they don't. it got me thinking- are you supposed to lock your doors while driving? is it to prevent people from car jacking the car at a stop or to keep them from flying open in an accident? doesn't locking them make it harder for them to get you out of the car in case of an accident?
do you drive with your doors locked or unlocked? do you have a reason?

@regberadaisy: you mean so they don't open them? do you also do the child lock so they can't be opened from the inside?

My car has auto lock. When I drive DH's old Honda I have to lock it myself. I do it to feel more secure.

@mrs. bird: Yes, our current car auto locks but doesn't have child locks. Our next car I def want child locks too! Not that my LO is old enough yet for that but I'm just used to doing it with my nieces and nephews.

I lock them. I never used to, but a few years ago, I lived in a very walkable neighbourhood and it always creeped me out when the pedestrians were very close to my car. So now I lock them.

I'm a crazy person, and don't even like driving with my windows down (because of carjacking (not that I've ever even heard of it in our city)), so I definitely lock my doors ... they auto-lock, but if it were an option, I'd want them locked.
If the accident were bad enough that I couldn't unlock the doors, I imagine rescue personnel would just break a window to unlock the car.

My car auto-locks when I go above 10 mph and unlocks when I put the car in park.

I have auto lock and the doors unlock when you take the key out of the ignition. I feel very spoiled, because none of my other cars did this. But I do prefer to drive with the doors locked. I have this irrational fear that if they aren't locked, the door will fail and fly open as I'm going down the highway at 70 mph.

Mine doesn't auto lock but I ALWAYS lock the second I'm in the car.
My friend once was driving in the city and was stopped at a red light and a man walking by opened her passenger side door and tried getting in! Luckily she had stuff in the seat and the light turned green and she drove off without anything bad happening.

I always lock because of the random people at the intersections, but I'm not sure safety-wise what is better.

Hmmm. Interesting! I live in a city, so there are always ppl near my car, I guess maybe I'm used to it. I feel like I am more likely to be in an accident & need to be taken out than injured by someone getting in my car, but I'd love to see some real stats on which is safer!

@mrs. bird: Well, in an accident, wouldn't you put your car in park (if you were able to). If so, my car would unlock.
Now, if you were in an accident (like you went off a bridge and into the water), I don't think you would be able to open your doors due to the water pressure. In this case, you would have to break the windows.
Hehe, sorry. There were two recent events where this happened which is why I thought of it.
ETA: I think new VW cars have a safety feature that unlocks the doors in an accident and does some other things. I remember seeing the commercial for it. http://www.imakenews.com/mewsautogroup/e_article002447345.cfm?x=b11,0,w

Mine autolock & unlock when the car is in park & driver side door is opened.
It does kind of concern me in the case of an accident! When it's just me & the kids though I always lock then as soon as we her in the car (gotta protect the littles)
@bluestriped bee: If I remember correctly you can open the doors when the pressure outside the car matches the pressure inside the car. I was taught you continue pushing on the door until it equalizes..... Of course I have no problem kicking out a window either! Lol

Mine auto lock when I shift out of park and unlock when I park. My first car didn't do this but I always drove with locked doors then too.

Always locked. I had a person get into my car once and it was pretty scary!
Turned out it was a "misunderstanding". They were on a cross walk so I stopped for them to cross, and apparently they were actually "hitchhiking" even though I swear I never saw any thumb out or anything so they came and climbed in and was like... I'm trying to get to the mall, which way are you headed??

In the US, I always lock my doors as soon as I start the car. Too many crazy, aggressive, road ragey, dodgy people carrying who knows what kind of weapons.
In Australia, I never lock my car doors. Never. Even if there are a group of somewhat sketchy looking people nearby, I don't ever feel as though I need to lock the doors. I just feel a million times safer living in Australia than I ever did in the US.

I never lock mine...never occurred to me. When I drive my mom's trailblazer (we're gonna buy it from them soon, anyways), it's got auto-lock, so I forget when I drop DS at school and the teacher can't open the car door, lol.

I know of someone that was at a stop sign when someone walked up to his car, opened the door, SHOT HIM, and stole his car.
Definitely lock your doors, ladies. Please.
