Yes, the pressure from laying flat would make them cry. Also any kind of congestion - cough or runny nose - was a sign for both my boys. They usually didn't have fevers. They may be a little extra whiny and not eat as well. But basically for my kids, any congestion generally led to an ear infection.

my sons only ear infection was low grade / no fever paired with horrible nights - not sleeping, crying in bed. He usually sleeps really well so it was pretty clear something was wrong and then the dr easily saw it when we took him in.

Agree with mamasig. My DD has had three ear infections and only one with a fever. The first she did have a fever and that was her only sign of infection. The second I took her to the dr for pink eye. No pink eye the ear infection was making her eyes red. The third was diagnosed yesterday and we were at the dr for a completely different reason. Bottom line I would take her in. I have gone a few times thinking it was an ear infection cause she doesn't always show the classic signs fever, pulling ears, extra fussy.

We've been through two sets of ear tubes at 3 years old so we've seen pretty much everything when it comes to ear infections, but my LO never runs a fever with them. I would say take your LO to the pediatrician. Regardless of the cause, your LO has been acting unlike herself for a few days in a row now, and I always think that warrants a check to see what's going on.

E has a double ear infection right now. Here were my clues:
-crappy sleepy
- super fussy/clingy
-threw his food at his food therapist
-waited to nurse more often
-a few days later digging at his ears with his fingers

We are now on the second antibiotic because the first didn't appear to be helping. He seems to be feeling better now.

Was there a cold or congestion prior? That was always the trigger for my son. First a cold or congestion, then 2 weeks or so later, an ear infection, with a fever. I knew when a dose if Advil would make him act normal for a few hours.
