My poor LO (3.5 months) has been dealing with a really bad eczema flare up for the past week- mostly under his neck and in his little fat rolls on his legs :(. We’ve been using steroid cream for the past week (oh how he loves that) but it doesn’t seem to be helping. We’re taking him back to the pediatrician tomorrow and I think they are going to have to prescribe some kind of antibiotic since it looks like it might be infected. Once it clears up, we’re trying to figure out what our approach is going to be to prevent it from getting bad again in the future. If you’ve dealt with eczema with your LO- what products do you use/not use? Do you have a routine with how often you do baths, lotion, etc?

LO developed eczema at 4 months and dr. prescribed steroid cream for body and face. We used the face one and it helped a LOT (but LO's constant drool always brought it back the raw skin). We never ended up using the body cream just because I felt iffy about it. But the doctor gave us the following suggestions:
- bathe using lukewarm water with baby oil mixed into it to seal in moisture
- then, lightly towel dry and use Vaseline generously (he said, "seriously, use it like there's no tomorrow. The greasier, the better.") and clothe LO in light cotton
- moisturize oftenIt helped, for sure, but she isn't completely cleared up. She gets dry patches every now and then.

@Rubies: Yeah- I'm hoping we don't have to use the steroid cream again. He actually had another weird skin rash/virus that sort of coincided with the eczema so I think the doctor was hoping it would help for both. Thanks for the suggestions!

Ditto to what @rubies said! We've been bathing our son in lukewarm water and made the baths very short. Then pat dry/air dry. Then we immediately slather him with aquaphor (like super super greasy all over). The moment he wakes up, more aquaphor. And more aquaphor throughout the day. Oh, we also noticed a big improvement when we switched his soap. We now use this Aveeno wash and it's definitely helped a lot. It's more like a lotiony soap (it doesn't lather). But after a few day of use, I noticed an improvement.

I'd say doing the routine above helped improve my son's eczema by at least 75% percent. He still has a few dry patches but nothing like the red, itchy patches he had before.

I'm just going to throw this out there. Are you sure it is excema? We were told that our son had excema for 7 weeks before it was finally diagnosed as a yeast infection. Once we had the right treatment it got better.
Is the excema possibly food related? My sister's daughter's excema almost completely cleared up when they removed eggs from her diet. I hear that others have success when they remove dairy from their diets.

I had excema as a little kid (and still do). Mine was always especially bad on my feet - where I'd get huge cracks in my toes. My mom slathered my feet in some kind of Rx cream, wrapped in Saran Wrap, and then topped off with socks before bed. I think I remember it helping, but plastic wrap on you feet when you're trying to fall asleep wasn't so much fun, and I can't really imagine covering a baby in plastic wrap . . .
