@belleoftheballe: oh yeah, they were manageable. I don't think she would have done all that if they were REALLY bad. But, it was her second, so she already know how her body responds in labor (how fast she's likely to deliver, etc).
I imagine it's much more difficult the first time around when you don't know what to expect, don't know how fast you'll progress, etc.

I was terrified of my water breaking at work too since I planned to work til my EDD. It broke in my sleep

I was in the minority in that my water broke and it was my first sign of labor - contractions came soon after. I was sleeping in bed @ 4:30am. Not a gush of water but I woke up immediately and knew what had just happened. The gush came about 20 mins later while I was on the phone with my doctor. I think the odds of something like this happening at work is really slim (I was worried about it too!!) and if it does happen, chances are it will be something only you notice. Just high tail it to the bathroom with your cellphone to call for back-up (this we may plan lol). I also was going to bring a towel to sit on at work just in case but never got around to it.

i had the crazy gush. but had enough time to scoot into the restroom. I felt like a tiny pop and crossed my legs and jetted to the rest room - and the water was crazy. I kept getting up to call someone to help, but then the gush would start again. I was at a dinner party.......,I was super embarrassed. Everyone was very very very calm and wonderful about it.
Your co-workers will get over it. Its life. maybe pack a heavy duty pad in your bag to help soak it up in case it happens. But I have heard it is a small % that does happen too

Sounds like your coworker is being dumb and wanting attention/drama.
I had planned to stop working 3 weeks before my due date, but I was bored and needed at work so I took on small projects and worked part off the day from home and came in when I felt like it.
I got super uncomfortable driving my 40 minute commute at 39 weeks, so I told them I was done and would start leave then. My water broke the next day at home, it soaked my clothes, but did not splash everywhere. My first sign was bloody show/mucus plug with water breaking 2 hours later, and contractions starting 2 hours after that.
I would have been ok driving until 2 hours after my water broke, when contractions started. I wasn't worried about it gushing at work, we are animal people, it's hard to shock my coworkers and we had a fire department across the street.

co-workers are crazy!! I had two co-workers tell me how nervous they were for me to work up until my due date because 'what if you go into labor here?! what would we do?!' I said you'll do nothing haha. my husband works less than 5 minutes away. and if it's a real emergency there is a hospital less than 10 away that has a labor and delivery floor.

I'm totally stealing a pair of depends from work when the time comes just for this reason.

I teach, and am working until the last day of school. Opted out of a summer assignment and into disability, since I'll be having DD just a few weeks later (assuming she's not early). I'd work until the end, if my due date was sooner.

My water breaking was my first sign of labor. The good news is that it happened at 4am. The bed news is that it was a steady stream and I soaked through multiple pads, towels, underwear - whatever I stuffed down there to try to contain it! It would NOT have been pretty had I been at work.
It's different for everyone though!

@beesknees: that sounds so scary!! i'm glad everyone was calm at the dinner party.
I'm "favoriting" this thread to re-read when I'm scared of the water breaking scenario again. And yes - coworker does like drama!

If my work was in the same city I was delivering then I would have no problem working till I went into labour. However I live/work 1hr 45min from the hospital so I just hope I make it!
With DD1 my water broke just before pushing and DD2 it broke during pushing.

My water broke as my first sign of labor. It was when I was getting out of bed in the morning (on a Sunday). At first I didn't know if I'd peed myself, or my water had broke! Haha. I didn't get contractions for another 14 hours, so I definitely wasn't in any sort of rush. My water didn't stop leaking after that initial gush until I actually birthed DD, soooo gross and slimy.
I would suggest keeping some big bertha pads with you in case your water does break while you're out. Also, some junky towels you can throw down in all cars you drive/ride in.
