Doesn't the elf have magical powers (kinda like Santa) that gets him where he needs to be? I think 2 is sort of young for that kind of thinking but always, always fall back on magic.

And if you forget to take him with you, no worries, he's watching over your house at home, waiting for you to come home.

Don't lose the Elf! As Santa's helper the Elf should definitely road trip it with you and move all around your parents' house. Sounds really fun!

My SIL started elf on the shelf when her youngest was around 2.5. It included a week plus trip to grandmas house and they brought the elf. We spent several days with them and the kids were still all excited about the magic of the elf, so I think having the elf "know" that you're out of town and showing up at grandmas probably adds to it's magic somehow.

You could also just have your Mom buy one for her house. Then she can put it out for LO and you don't have to worry about traveling with it.

@daniellemybelle: bring him with! Elves have magic. And, I just wanted to add how excited I am that they're old enough for elf on a shelf this year! Christmas is going to be so fun.

Last year we had to travel to house hunt the weekend before Christmas, so we brought him. But, I had a four year old. I don't know if my two (almost three year old) really noticed. But, it's super easy to pack, bring it!!! Christmas only gets more exciting and more fun as they get older I can't wait for this year!
