I kind of want to tell these parents to take a chill pill......
What say you? Are you a parent who does Elf on the Shelf? What are your feelings on this?

Honestly, this seems kind of ridiculous to me. GMA is not a kids show. It is for adults. It's not like someone broke into the middle of Sesame Street to say, "Guess what kids? Santa's not real!" But I think I'm also in the minority that thinks the Elf is a little creepy.

I was skeptical but Charlie loves his elf!
As for GMA, I don't think it's on them to childproof every episode. The show is aimed at parents, I thought?

@MrsSCB: lol I'm with you. I think Elf is creepy and too much work!! A friend put her daily (sigh) photo of her elf on FB today. The elf had squirted toothpaste all over the bathroom sinks. Who's going to clean that up? Certainly not the elf!

@mediagirl: Haha toothpaste?? Talk about creating more work for yourself...That stuff dries as hard as a rock!

Meh, I agree it's an adult show and I doubt many kids are listening in on it anyway...
@mediagirl: Is the elf supposed to be naughty? ....like why would is squirt toothpaste all over lol

I can't decide if we want to or not. But then again, who knows if it will even be popular by the time DD is old enough to enjoy it.

@Bao: I have no idea! I'm clueless about this thing. I thought parents were just supposed to move the elf around at night and then the child got to search for him in the morning. Now it seems like it has turned into an online challenge to come up with the most interesting way for your elf to be found in the morning - naughty or nice!
This is a funny blog post on it: http://www.peopleiwanttopunchinthethroat.com/2011/12/over-achieving-elf-on-shelf-mommies.html

@Bao: I've seen him do "naughty" things.
I'm up in the air about Elf on the Shelf, but I agree with everyone else, GMA doesn't seem like a show directed at kids.

@MrsSCB: I agree with you 100% - GMA isn't a show for kids and they shouldn't have to censor themselves just on the chance kids might be watching. That's ridiculous. Plus I think the Elf on the Shelf is creepy.

@mediagirl: haha that link is funny!! made me lol
@.twist.: yeah me too, I asked my sister who has the book and she said no where does it say they are supposed to be naughty. I wouldn't want my kids to think they could squirt toothpaste all over the bathroom or draw on each others faces to look like rudolph. haha.

I didnt know about this elf on the shelf until now. I personally don't get the point of all these little lies associated with christmas and santa. But I do sympathise with the parents who got upset

@Adira: Exactly, you're totally right that they shouldn't have to censor. Some things are allowed to be just for adults -- GMA and all of the other morning shows are not shows for children, nor have they ever claimed to be. Sure, a lot of parents watch while they're at home taking care of their kids, but it's not fair to be mad if there's content not suitable for children. It's still a news show. It just strikes me as a little funny that this is what these parents are all up in arms about, when presumably their kids are also watching the show when it airs hard news stories about murders, kidnapping, war, etc.

@MrsSCB: Seriously!!! And don't shows like GMA usually say stuff like "Oh, now we're going to be talking about ____" or "Up next, the Elf on the Shelf!" I would think most people will get that they aren't going to be talking about the toy strictly in the "fantasy" sense and that it would go over the mechanics of what it is and how it works. Send your kids out of the room or turn it off when you see something like this is going to be on the show!

@mrbee: DD loves her elf too! What did Charlie name him?
I think this whole thing is kind of overblown... And easy to explain to kids with "Well, she obviously didn't follow the rules about not touching so her elf lost all his magic. How sad that he can't fly to the North Pole anymore now." It's really that easy.

I do think the elf is actually cute, I love little bits of magic and wonder and if I can give some of that to DD I will.

Lol. No, it's not a kids show but it's not on at night so kids can see it. So they should have anticipated that parents would get upset over them revealing the elf secret, I guess! People get upset over everything these days.
I just don't have time in my day to deal with this elf thing, though, so we're not gonna do it.

I didn't think kids watched GMA. I think the parents are overreacting a bit.

I thought elf on the shelf seemed cute but I didn't know the story behind it. I pictured it as a funny/cutesy thing that is silly for kids. He does "naught" things but I wouldn't make him do truly naughty things because that might encourage similar behaviors in my kid(s). We don't plan to do Santa either, but my parents still played "Santa" with us even though we knew the whole time... So elf might be along those lines if we decide to do it... Still not sure though
As for the show it was pretty lame I think to say elf isn't real for those that do the whole elf thing..

I think it's cute, but luckily I don't have to worry about ever incorporating it into our lives, or any of the Santa stuff for that matter. Being Jewish in December makes life so much simpler, without the stress of decorating and baking and convincing the kiddo about stuff like Santa and elves and whatnot
