I tried to put R in the Ergo on Sunday. I am wondering if she is too small for it. She is 4 months this week but doesn't even weight 13 lbs yet. She started crying as soon as I strapped her in, when she loves the Ktan. Almost like she isn't tall enough for it. Her arms and head don't seem to fit right. Anyone have pictures on how she should look in it.

Agreed, at 13 lbs you will probably still need the insert.
Fwiw, we used the insert kind of sideways for the first few months and kids were much happier than the 'official' positioning.

She was really awkward in the Ergo without the insert at 4 months (her legs stuck straight out). If you want, you could roll up a receiving blanket or something and tuck it under her bum.

@Smurfette: I mean, the infant insert says it has to be used for babies 7-12 lbs, so TECHNICALLY, R shouldn't need it. But she's just barely past the cut-off, so I bet she'd be more comfortable with one.

@Smurfette: No, because you're just creating some height for her. As long as you have the Ergo straps adjusted so that she's still close to your chest, she shouldn't be flopping around in there.

@Smurfette: @Freckles: I agree that rolling up a receiving blanket to put under her butt should be safe. She's going to be cozied up against you, so it's not like there's anywhere for her to go! Plus the insert is mostly just the butt part, elevating them up.

@Smurfette: I actually haven't used the Ergo lately. I was just thinking I might try it out tonight so I could give you some advice! If he's in an agreeable mood when we get home, I'll try it both with and without the insert and let you know how it goes!

@Smurfette: I just got home from my mom and baby group and this week we had someone from a local babywearing group come in to talk to us and help us with babywearing. One of the other moms had an Ergo and had a fairly small (3-ish months) baby in it and it was recommended that she use it without the insert. The key, when they're still pretty small, is to make sure they're sitting up pretty high. So her head she not far below your chin. That offers the most security.
Also, it may just take her while to get used to it. The person who talked to us today kept saying to keep time in the carriers "short and positive" while babies are still getting used to them. So that may just be 5 mins/day at first, and when R starts to cry take her out and try again tomorrow

I do think what @hergreenapples' said about having them high up is key. I think you're supposed to be able to kiss the top of their heads while they're in the carrier.

@Smurfette: watch out the insert is really padded and if its hot out your baby will be REALLY warm. I hated the insert and just used the k'tan for as long as we could. if you watch the video i linked it was really helpful with positioning

@Smurfette: She basically just said that once they're no longer tiny newborns they no longer need the insert and that the insert can cause them to sit incorrectly in the SSC. She said the manufacturers are required to put weight minimums/maximums on carriers, but that usually babies don't need the insert well before they reach the weight limit, as they are too long for it.

@Smurfette: Have you tried letting her keep her legs in and kind of stand inside of it? That worked for us when L was a little smaller, but I never had much luck with a rolled up blanket under her. She is just now at a size where the Ergo seems to work well for long periods of time and where she can see out well...almost 18 lbs and 26" long. So maybe R is just a little short still.

@tororojo: I haven't tried that, I will. She does like to stand up. At her 2 month appointment she was in the 90th% for her height. So I would think she would be tall enough. She doesn't fit in 0-3 anymore cause of the length, but 3-6 are too big in her waist.

@Smurfette: That's about how big L was at her 2 month appointment, so I started trying to make the Ergo work pretty soon after that but she was just too small. She had her 4 month yesterday and is 95th for height and weight, and she's still a tiny bit short for it...but tall enough that she can chew on it, which seems to be fine with her! I don't think it's true that most 4 month olds are big enough for the Ergo with no insert. But at least we'll be able to use it for a long time!

DD always cried before she got used to something. I think we put her in it for a few minutes everyday for about a week before she realized, oh this is my new carrier. We introduced it a little later, though, more like 5.5-6mo. We had been using the Baby Bjorn since birth.

I think I tried around 3 and a half or 4 months with LO and she did not like it. She also loved the k'tan like your LO. I felt the same way, like she wasn't tall enough, and didn't want her legs splayed out. I do have the infant insert and tried it with and without and she was totally not into it. I basically just put it aside and tried again at 4.5 months and she LOVES it. I use the butt pillow that came with the insert so she's up a little higher and it's definitely our preferred mode of transport these days. I think your LO might just be in that in between phase where she'd be too big for the infant insert but not quite ready to go without it. I would definitely try and get the little pillow or use a towel or blanket. LO is probably 26 in long and she still needs it to be at the right height.

@Smurfette: Gahhh, I knew I forgot something!!! But, in my defense, Xander was asleep when we got home and then woke up to nurse and went straight to bed, so I didn't have time to test him out in the Ergo.

@Smurfette: K still needs to use the infant insert, but recently it seems even more awkward and uncomfortable because she wants to stick her legs out, but still kind of short? So, for this in-between phase, I've been favoring the K'tan more. And also since it's been warmer. I'd just use the K'tan for a bit longer until you can use the Ergo by itself since you haven't been using the infant insert this whole time. I think we'll be ready to stop using that pretty soon, so it might be a waste of $ for you.
