We've been battling thrush for some time now. I think I'm ready to try gentian violet. If you've used it what was your experience with it? Did it work? How long did it take? Any tips?

I haven't had to use Gentian Violet but i can definitely sympathise on the thrush, Miss A and I battled with it for almost three months!
What have you tried so far?

I used it and to put it bluntly it was a total sh*t show. And it didn't work.
I battled thrush forever and what finally worked was a 50/50 solution of water/vinegar before and after every feeding and before bed every night. Also only wear bras/tanks once between washings and wash in very hot water. Try to dry in the sun too. I wish I'd known to use vinegar so much earlier! Good luck

@Bao: Thanks for the bump!
@Kemma: We've just been doing the Nystatin for me and her. It starts to get better and then it just flares up again. So frustrating!
@Mrs. Stroller: Thanks! I'm going to try the vinegar tonight. How long did it take to go away?

@katsupgirl: from start to finish it was months, but from the start of vinegar I felt much better within a couple weeks or so. The wash itself felt good straight away for the itchiness. Then I just kept it up twice a day until after his first birthday just to keep it at bay. I had a cup on my dresser and used pieces of cut up flannel to wipe my breasts. Use each wipe just once between washings too

@katsupgirl: the unfortunate thing about Nystatin is that it only works in 35% of cases! Miss A was eventually given a script for Daktarin gel which cleared her thrush in four days, and I had success using Micobazole cream.
The other thing to try would be some probiotics for both of you, how old is your LO?

@Mrs. Stroller: awesome thanks! Great idea with the flannel wipes!

@Kemma: she's 7 months. I just got probiotics. I wasn't sure how to use them.

@katsupgirl: Ooh yes, I forgot about that. Probiotics for you and for her! I have the powdered kind from Whole Foods, Udo's Choice I think, (in their vitamin fridge case) for M and put one "serving" in the bottle he takes to daycare. They're so much less expensive than some other brands and work just as well from what I can tell.

@katsupgirl: my LO is EBF and I had probiotic powder so I used to mix the powder with breastmilk then syringe it into her mouth (she doesn't take a bottle).
Do you sterilise all LO's bottles, paci's etc? Thrush is notoriously difficult to get rid of in bottles etc.

@Kemma: LO is EBF but I'm going to work so she'll be taking pumped milk. We sterilize once or twice a week.

@katsupgirl: you could probably add the probiotic to LO's bottles
Could you maybe try sterilising your bottles etc every night for a week to see if that makes a difference?

Thanks ladies! I'm going to go hardcore with the sterilizing, probiotics and vinegar this week. Wish me luck! Happy Mother's Day!
