Long story short my youngest sister has Mono
Diagnosed today
We are supposed to go to a local Marriot as a family tomorrow and Saturday for beach/ pool fun!
Obviously she isn't going but my Mom is who lives with her?!
I know it is spread only by saliva and such, but with 2 young kids I'm a worry wart
WWYD?!
We will not be sleeping there as we live super close, just crashing the pool and beach!

I'd skip it personally. Mono basically wiped out my immune system (says my Mom) I was sick for months and had to drop out of ski team and basically catch everything now.

My parents think the same of me and germs. To be fair I used to be really pretty bad, but mono sucks!! I'd just probably go and do as much germ control as I could, opinions be damned.

@FaithFertility: lol mine too but occasionally the kids get fevers in the 100s with them. Although once my son had one and we went to see my parents anyway. (He acted fine..) Ugh I dunno just do as best you can. My parents are also the type to not let me live it down if I skipped.

@FaithFertility: You just have to make your best call but I'm here to support you and say that you're not crazy for being concerned. I have a two-year-old and I cannot control what she does including planting a wet kiss on her grandma.

For what it's worth, my friend went on a business trip and came home with mono, and she wasn't sharing saliva with anybody. That being said, neither her husband nor her daughter caught it from her.

She more than likely didn't contract it on that trip....it says symptoms don't occur until 4-8weeks after exposure if at all sooo weird -
Do your kids kiss your mom on the mouth ever? Or stick their hands on her mouth? If so I would be inclined to pass. My DD is a mouth kisser, likes to share food, etc. and I could see her passing saliva with a grandmother.

Jk, kind of. I'm not a doctor, but I did just have (still have?) mono. Anyway, this is not a concern at all for kids, as per my multiple doctors and my kids' pediatrician. Even if they are exposed directly and get it, for them it tends to be either no reaction at all, or a mild reaction like a 1 day fever. It's mainly teens that are affected most, and then some adults, too.
I was totally freaked about my kids being exposed, and every single person has told me it's not a big deal. They told me it's not necessary to miss work or not socialize---it's just that mono makes some people tired, so they end up missing work/school from exhaustion, not because of the mono.
Supposedly, most people have been exposed to Epstein Barr virus, and most people don't have a reaction at all to it--just a few of us lucky ones (and my doctors think it's because I also have an autoimmune disease that I've been feeling so low--it's not really just the mono, it's the combination of the two).
Anyway, I'm a teacher and I never missed work and everyone said that was fine. By the time you are diagnosed, you've already exposed everyone to it.

And my kids and husband have been totally healthy. I don't know anyone else IRL (at my school, in my social group) that has had Mono recently. I didn't get it from anything I shared saliva with, and no one I know has gotten it from me.
And the incubation period for EBV is 4-6 weeks. So your sister came into contact with EBV 4-6 weeks ago and if any of you have seen her in that time frame, you would have already been exposed. Except EBV isn't "caught" like that--you'd have to be sharing saliva with your sister, and you'd have to have an already weakened immune system.

What you şay is everything we keep reading!We were with her Sunday for Father's Day I'm going to still request Grandma is hands off the baby and DD too which should be ok, I have other sister's to help

@FaithFertility: I was going to say what @Anagram: said. I would also add that there's a very good chance that your mom has already had the EB virus and would therefore would not be at risk of getting it from your sister unless she was part of a very tiny percentage of people who have mono more than once. Most people get it as a child but have little to no symptoms. It's harder on teenagers and adults, as are most illnesses really. I am part of the unlucky small percentage that has had mono twice (both times as an adult actually), and I still wouldn't bat an eye about having my kids around someone with mono much less someone who is just living with someone with mono.
Mono sucks when you hear about it, but that's because you hear about it when teenagers and adults get it, not little kids.
