DH and I want to take a family vacation next summer with the LO (who will be just shy of 2 years old) next summer. Any recommendations? Preferably in the continental US and even better of its drivable! (We live in NJ)

myrtle beach!! we stayed at the marina inn at grand dunes, in between myrtle & n myrtle beach, not on the beach, but they had a shuttle to a private beach, and driving distance to shopping, the boardwalk, etc. it was the perfect mix of quiet + crowd!

Come down to Virginia Beach! There are tons of things to do for kids out here like the aquarium, zoo, and there are always a whole bunch of festivals in the summer.

Destin, FL! The Gulf beaches are so worth the travel.
Otherwise Myrtle Beach, VA Beach, or Hilton Head are nice too!

I am from Cape Cod so that will always be my first vote. BUT, I went to on vacation to Ocean Isle Beach, NC in 2007 and it was AWESOME. It was only about 20 minutes from Myrtle Beach when we needed a little more action, but it was so secluded and relaxing and was mostly families. Very quiet. I want to take my family SO badly.

I vote for Destin/Fort Walton beaches! They are gorgeous, the water is usually calm. The color of the water is just so beautiful there. And it's super family friendly. Lots of condos to rent so you can have a kitchen and laundry.

I live on the coast of NC near SC. Myrtle Beach is great. Like @bpcmarj: said, Ocean Isle Beach is quieter and family friendly, but its also really close to Myrtle. I actually got married on Ocean Isle Beach and I've lived here my entire life, so I may be a bit biased, but I think this area is awesome

Heck, I'd go to LBI, Harvey Cedars specifically...they have a bay beach that is enclosed and wonderful for little ones.

Outer Banks, NC (I refuse to call it OBX, lol). My family used to rent a house in Emerald Isle every summer for a week on the sound side, and then take the 5 mins walk to the beach. So much fun!

@lilteacherbee: @bpcmarj: We took our family beach vacation on OIB this year!
Another vote for it and/or Myrtle Beach! We love it there!

I agree with @HABESBABE, definitely Outer Banks, NC! It is also ridiculously cheap if you can wait until after Labor Day. We just went to Avon, NC (on Hatteras Island) and loved it! Quiet, but close to restaurants and bars. If you want to walk everywhere I'd recommend Ocracoke!

Another vote for the Outer Banks. I think they are nicer and more vacation-y that Virginia Beach and only about 1.5 hours further.

Another vote for the Outer Banks. I've vacationed there for 25 years and it's my home away from home.

I was really impressed with Hilton Head, and though I was only pregnant when I went, it is totally family friendly!

We're planning to do the Outer Banks next summer. I can't wait!

@HabesBabe: Totally agree with you and PPs re: Outer Banks. We LOVED our vacation in Hatteras and there were kiddos everywhere having a blast. We found out about LO the last day there, and we can't wait to go back with her.

I would recommend Bethany or the Outer Banks. Myrtle is very touristy and can get really crowded, but it does have a lot of stuff to do.
