I'm lucky that I work for a company who makes it known that family comes first, this makes it less nerve-racking to call in sick for a child. I have some friends who don't have this luxury. How family friendly is your work?

Yes. Its hard when people judge why I haven't moved jobs in over 8 years. I dont get paid great, but the benefits are great and allow me to still be a mom.

I'm self employed, so very friendly. My husband's company is also very friendly. He often takes off of work when me or my LOs are sick. He has a very generous/accommodating sick leave policy.

I voted other. I think my boss for sure makes it very family friendly since he's super understanding and never has a problem when I have to come in late/leave early/randomly take off for LO. As a company in general I think more can be done to truly make this a family friendly place.

Companywise, I think more could be done to make it more family friendly. My supervisor is very understanding and lets me take time as I need it, like yesterday when I had to leave to take H to the ped for a busted lip. We have new leadership, so I'm not sure how that's going to work out.

Nope. Exactly what you said - they pretend but still judge.

I work for myself so it's flexible. DHs job is extremely inflexible and not family friendly.

I've recently had some issues with childcare and my coworkers didn't bat an eye when I had to change my hours.
They're of the mindset that as long as you do what you need to, it's fine.

No, they are not family friendly in the least. I don't, necessarily, sweat bullets, but I definitely try to arrange alternate ways to deal staying home or whatever.
It's pretty frustrating.

@looch: Exactly, as long as you get your shit done they don't care.
I work from home when the kids are sick and she prefers that we don't log in as a sick day because she knows we will make up for it on days/weeks/months(!) we're working crazy hours.

I work for a government agency that is known to be a "career agency" - meaning most people come here out of law school and work here until retirement. So the agency takes a long view on people's family life - they understand that there will be a few years in the decades that employee works for them that they are raising young families - so they roll with it. Also, since we're all lawyers, they don't mess around with anything remotely in violation of any kind of law, regulation, or policy. You will never hear a word from any supervisor or powers that be about someone taking leave that they are entitled to. I also double lucked out because my particular department is virtually ALL parents of young children so everyone is always popping in and out for kids being sick or school events or whatever and we cover each other as much as possible.

I don't have kids yet, but I've seen eye rolls and heard some judgy comments when someone has had to call in for a child-related issue. I think part of the problem is that our manager is fairly young and child free, so there may be a general lack of understanding on her side of things. I'm planning to move on before we TTC, so this shouldn't be an issue for me.

My division of the company is very family first, however that is solely bc the managers are. The rest of the company not so much.

with our new manager who has kids herself, it is very family friendly. With the previous manager who was here when i returned my last mat leave, it was the total opposite.

I'm a teacher in Canada and am afforded plenty of sick days & discretionary days to use if LO is sick and I need to stay home. Or to go to appointments as necessary. I keep very tight hours and work through my lunch so that I can leave straight away after school to pick up LO from school. If my LO is performing in an assembly, my principal will arrange coverage for my class and let me dash over to her school so I can watch. Our school board provides generous maternity leaves and other leaves to attend to family emergencies and other events.
I feel I have a very family friendly career.

I'm a teacher and my principal was a single mother, and my team are all parents. If we need time off for kids, nobody bats an eye. We are also able to bring kids to an non teaching day, eg professional development and conferences - this also extends to puppies and small dogs.

Very family friendly. Lots of senior staff and even company partners alter their schedules to do daycare pickup, stay home with sick kids, etc. And nobody batted an eye when I asked for a 6-month leave (without pay) when I had LO. It is expected that you'll stay communicative with your coworkers and get your stuff done though, so that can mean working evenings or weekends to catch up.

@T.H.O.U.: Ditto! I'm underpaid, but the work flexibility just can't be beat! I want to change jobs/get paid more, but I'm afraid I'll lose the flexibility of leaving/coming in whenever or working from home whenever.

I'm a SAHM so this doesn't apply to me, but my husband is in the military and he is not allowed to call in, ever.
