Need some ideas for people asking for LO's 1st birthday. What are some of your favorite educational/early development toys (ex: shape sorter, stacking rings, etc.)?

Does anyone have a bead maze like this or play telephone? If so, does your LO like it?

Puzzles! And shape sorters. We have a lot of both, and LO is still playing with them a lot.

Around 1 yr, these were great for LO:

I looooove Melissa & Doug and Hape toys. DS has a fun Hape xylophone, and M&D puzzles, blocks, a shape sorter, a tunnel, and a bunch of instruments. He also has some Kindermusik toys that he loves!

@grizz: yes a tunnel!
We got one for LO's birthday and he still loves it at 20 months.

@lawbee11: R has the chatter telephone here and at my parents' house. She likes handing me the phone to "talk."

@lawbee11: this one:

same one that they use in his gym classes and he loves it!

Sadie got this picnic basket for her first birthday, and still loves it & plays with it every day:

@lawbee11: We were gifted the little bead maze. LO rarely plays with it. She has in the last 2ish months than she ever has before. But it's certainly not a favorite toy.
She absolutely loves her shape sorter, wood blocks (a gift!), and a set of plastic cups that she loves to stack and unstack repeatedly. (the plastic cups are from an eatery DH frequents . . . it only serves drinks in these cups. they're big plastic tumbler cups).
She also loves her Ikea tent!

@lawbee11: G has 2 bead mazes, and she likes them! She mostly likes to carry them around and bang them on things

@lawbee11: Anything that Melissa & Doug makes is awesome - have you seen the cupcake set? Too cute! Hape toys are good also. We have a wooden shape sorter that's fantastic, and a set of stacking bowls that are really great.

@hilsy85: Thanks!
@photojane: That is SO cute...and there's a strawberry
@MsLipGloss: Have you seen these blocks? DH wants to get these for M! http://www.amazon.com/Uncle-Goose-Periodic-Building-Blocks/dp/B005JAE052
@Bookish: Yes, I could see M doing the same thing. She has the Vtech walker and she loves taking the phone off and it banging it all over the walker!

@lawbee11: I have not seen those before (they are awesome!). . . they would be great! Just a word of caution though, my LO has developed a habit of *tossing* (or throwing!) her blocks after she is done with them (to the side, or over her shoulder). So, just stay on your toes in case yours does that too (I have had a few really close calls!).

@photojane: R has this too and always presses the butterfly button to hear the same song. Cute but drives me crazy! Haha

@photojane: That's really cute! My LO loves to carry around baskets and bags.

@lawbee11: We have this one. We probably play with it, no lie, a solid hour a day! http://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Sunny-Patch-Tunnel/dp/B0032MYYBE
I forgot earlier... He is also obsessed with the Melissa and Doug play food, especially the set that Target carries that you can "slice". It comes with a little wooden butter knife. He will slice food and try to feed us for well over an hour

@MsLipGloss: Sadie's the same. So much so, I bought her a few canvas totes from the Dollar Tree. She just walks around stuffing things in there all day. Sometimes when I'm cleaning at night I'll find crazy things in there... utensils, tape, DVDs. I don't even know where she finds these things.

@lawbee11: R has had a maze type thing like the first link since she was 4 months old. She has never been into it.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@grizz: Holy crap, your kid will play with something for an hour?
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
I forgot to add balls! We have 4 or 5 balls that LO plays with all the time.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@MsLipGloss: Got it...watch out for flying blocks.
@Mrs. Oatmeal: The cupcake set is really cute!
@grizz: Ooh that tunnel is cute!
@Smurfette: Yeah, I could see her getting bored easily with the maze. They have one at the ENT's office and she likes it for a little while but then wants to move onto sticking her fingers in electrical sockets.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@photojane: That's so funny! I have several little baskets/furry halloween trick or treat baskets (one is a fox) that she uses the most . . Every few days or so, I leave an assortment of odds and ends in there for her to find too (she now loves to dump things out as much as putting things in). But you are so right . . . they find the most random things! I also keep gift bags in a closet that she loves to help herself to. And (gift) bows . . . she loves bows!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@lawbee11: well duh, electrical sockets are far more exciting.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@lawbee11: A block to the face is no joke! I took one to the foot and totally cried big crocodile tears over it.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@MsLipGloss: So I should get her bows and bags for her birthday, done!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@MsLipGloss: Sippy cups hurt like hell when dropped on your face. R gave me a swollen lip for three days.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@MsLipGloss: LOL! The corners are very sharp!
@Smurfette: I don't know why I'm even wasting my time. Should just tell people to give her empty water bottles.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@Smurfette: My LO head butted me a couple of weeks ago and my top lip instantly swelled up on one side! Didn't think I would need a helmet and a mouth guard to survive toddlerhood!
blogger / honeydew / 7081 posts
@MsLipGloss: @Smurfette: Getting poked in the eye with a yogurt spoon also ranks up there with painful baby injuries.
@lawbee11: Those blocks are awesome.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@Mrs. Oatmeal: *ouuuuch* At least she couldn't call you winky or blinky afterward.

I bought an expensive and complicated wooden shape sorter....you know what my son played with, a cardboard shoe box that i cut some holes into. He liked to stuff his set of play food in there!
I got the B squeeze blocks, my son loves them, they're soft and they stack surprisingly well. He also liked sponges, lol.
Just about anything you get will be played with creatively, lol, so I'd get a few nice looking wooden things to please your adult sensibilities and hope for the best. I like Haba and Janod brands a lot, for inspiration.

@Smurfette: just those two toys! His real fav things are disgusting, like the dogs' food and water bowls, his diaper pail,, etc. Baby dirtball.
