Favorite US City (or Canada) for a long weekend in Fall!

DH and I will be celebrating 5 years next fall (October) and I want to start saving for an awesome present!

Still thinking/hoping I can maybe make it a surprise destination for him and keep it a total secret. Will only want to be away from LO#2 (due in March) for 3 maybe 4 nights.

Looking for recommendations and why!!! Thanks!

About us - I am a foodie for sure. DH is a golf junky so maybe 1 round of golf would be allowed? We like to do historic tours. We like to be active but also like to relax - generally a nice mix 50/50! We are in metro-Detroit...so ideally I'd like to do something outside the midwest as we have done a lot of the places within the midwest.

Niagara-on-the-Lake! Beautiful fall colours, wineries, good food, golf course on the lake, boutique shopping, historical stuff all around...

I would go to NYC! Not a lot of golf options, but it would be so fun to go there childless!

Asheville or Charleston, depending on whether you'd rather be close to mountains or ocean. Both are fabulous in the fall and have great restaurants!

@KayKay: We just did charleston as a big family this year - it was so gorgeous! Is Ashville difficult to get to flying? Charleston was a bit of a hike for us driving!

@ms.line: We are actually staying a night in Pitt this weekend (driving to Philly) I'll keep an open eye and see what I think!

@lamariniere: We have done NYC quite a few times because we have a lot of friends that live there. The last time we went solo I wound up pregnant (whoops!) so I feel the need to be extra cautious when I am there. The only problem with it - is we end up seeing friends so much we dont really get quality "couple" time - you know? We just end up acting like college kids again! But I do dream of being a grown up there sometime (sad for a 33 year old to say).

@Mrs D: Niagara on the Lake is seriously beautiful. It's outside of Niagara Falls, a little town. Stratford is also beautiful! And anywhere in Muskoka (for fall colours, golf, AND some great restaurants).

@tinyperson: We did Niagara twice (we used to live in Boston so it was a great stopping point on our drives from Detroit to Boston) and loved it! I did think about Toronto since I have never been - but I think DH has been!

Agree with the Asheville recommendation! Definitely a foodie place with lots of great breweries too if you're interested in that. And then there's golf at the Grove Park Inn. Fall is absolutely beautiful there, but very popular so book a place to stay and restaurant reservations well in advance!

ETA: Also tons of great places to hike. And October is a great time for that too.

@Mrs D: Gotcha! What about Portland? That's a major foodie hub and there are tons of outdoor activities right next to it.

@mrs d: Asheville has an airport -- it's tiny but i assume DTW has something direct/easy. if not, you could look at flying into Greenville SC or Charlotte and then driving. Greenville would be a great place to split the trip with!

Prince Edward Island is beautiful in the fall and is one of DHs favourite golf destinations. I like to go for the food and falls colours Not sure how hard /$$$ it would be to get to from Detroit though

I love Montreal for a city vacation. Or if you're looking for more remote with beautiful fall colors, somewhere like Moosehead Lake in Maine or Mohonk in New York. Both are lovely.

Eta: I stayed at Mohonk Mountain House with my family. Full disclosure -- it was about 15 years ago. But I remember it being gorgeous and having nice hiking trails.

@lamariniere: I LOVE the idea of Portland but am nervous flying all the way out there DH is going to want to hit Bandon Dunes (major bucket list item) which I am not too in to! Maybe I could find a friend of his that wanted to piggy-back off our trip and meet DH there after our vacay?

Boston! New England in the Fall is just gorgeous. Obviously tons of history in and around Boston, and the food scene is amazing!

What about the Finger Lakes? Looks like it's about a 7 hour drive if you're open to driving. Tons of wineries, lots of fall foliage, good food and I'm pretty sure there are a few courses.

@lawbee11: Swoon...I'm dying to go to NOLA. This is atop my short list personally. For us, the PITA is that Delta charges an astronomical price for the n/s flight...like $600 for a 2 hour flight! Ugh!

@Truth Bombs: @Eko: We lived in Boston for 3 years (Brookline - DH is a BC alum) and adore the city. I actually am constantly trying to get DH to move back. However, it doesnt feel like vacation when we visit just because its our old home. But perhaps it would be fun to celebrate our 5 year anniversary in the city we met in?

@regberadaisy: Is that upstate NY?

Another vote for Charleston- we went there for a mini babymoon. SO. MUCH. FOOD. Seriously, we barely scraped the surface of the food scene when we were there. As far as history, you really can't beat this beautiful city. Stay in Isle of Palms to be even closer to the ocean

@Mrs D: I love Austin. That time of year it will still be pretty warm, I imagine at least the 80's but ask the Austin locals for confirmation on that one. The food scene is great there too. There are tons of outdoor activities so you'd be set in that regard as well.

I say Charleston over Savannah. We were choosing between the two for our babymoon and overwhelming were told Charleston. Savannah is a bit more touristy based on friends' opinions and the food scene is not quite on par with Charleston's.

Vegas? Nice weather, your husband could golf and you could hit a spa, foodie heaven, and you're not limited to strip stuff - last time we went we took an amazing guided hike/scramble in the Red Rock canyons. Or Chicago, but I think the golf situation might be more difficult.

@Mrs D: have you done much exploring outside of Boston while you were there? It would be really easy to do short trips to vermont or NH.

Phoenix/Scottsdale area is nice that time of year. I'm not familiar with their food scene, but the weather is still warm and there's plenty of stuff to do, but a lot of it is outdoorsy kind of stuff.

How about Burlington, Vermont on Lake Champlain? They have tons of good restaurants and breweries, there are also vineyards nearby. It's beautiful in fall! But I'm biased.

Also, regarding Austin, do you know if you can fly direct to Houston? If you plan to rent a car (which I think you'd probably want in Austin anyway) the drive from Houston to Austin is between 2-3 hours. So that could be an option. Definitely agree with Austin over Dallas.

@tinyperson: +1. I immediately thought of Niagara on the Lake, it's BEAUTIFUL!
Also, anywhere in the Muskokas (in Ontario), it's AMAZING in the fall and there's lots of tourist attractions and historic things to do. I'm not into golf, but I know there are many around!
The Deerhurst is one good example. Relaxing resort, with a spa!! Golf course, great food and comfy rooms. + ALL the colours! Can't stress how beautiful it all is!

@erinbaderin: Vegas would be fun. I have never been there solo as a couple - might be nice and relaxin! I know DH is dying to play the Wynn golfcourse...

@Eko: We did NH and VT a decent amount! I have always wanted to do Bar Harbor - so we could maybe stay in the city a night or two then head up to Maine for a night or two? I just love New England...I miss it so much!

@Beehive: I'll need to look more into it - especially now that DH finally got his passport renewed!!!

@IRunForFun: We did Burlington when we lived in Boston - but more from a Ski angle!

@regberadaisy: Ok - I'll look into it - driveability would be nice - although I despise the NY turnpike...just bc of how many times I did it back n forth to Boston!!!

@MrsSCB: Def can fly direct to Houston!

So I just looked up Muskokas...we have a tentative trip planned there for next year. We are bouncing around the idea with some friends of going to Cleveland House for a big summer family vacation! I knew it sounded familiar!
