Fess up: Which pregnancy "rule" did you break?

  1. heffalump

    GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts

Soft serve. I didn't know about that rule until my 3rd trimester, and by that time it was just too late to care.

  2. keiki_mama

    nectarine / 2504 posts

I ate lox and deli meats (sparingly), and had green tea and most mornings.

  3. mamabolt

    nectarine / 2797 posts

All of them pretty much. Didn't do any drugs and only drank after the first tri and sparingly. But everything else was fair game.

Fountain Coke, its the only thing that got me through the first trimester and still now in the second sounds delicious. Only fountain Coke, can't be out of a bottle or can. Otherwise no I've stayed away from it all but I'm with you I have a huge craving for sushi.

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

I don't count my Diet Cokes, since it was under the limit of caffeine. But I ate soft serve, soft cheese, and cold lunch meat all the time.

  6. Bookish

    GOLD / cantaloupe / 6581 posts

Pretty much all of them. I stayed under the caffeine limit but that = 2-3 sodas a day, which most people were horrified by (less total caffeine than a cup of coffee though!). I've eaten deli meat weekly, don't like my steak cooked over medium or medium rare, eaten soft serve on several occasions, and probably had several cookies worth of cookie dough over the last 7 months. I've also had 2-3 sips of DH's beer occasionally.

The only one I haven't broken is sushi, and that's really only because DH hates sushi and I haven't had the opportunity to eat it. I have a person assigned to bring me some in the hospital.....

I broke every "rule" except sushi (and I would've eaten sushi on a coast, if it were fresh...but not in the midwest). I don't worry over such minute percentages of what could possibly go wrong (and my doctor only said no to sushi and uncooked steak)

  8. Alivoo01

    wonderful olive / 19353 posts

I've had sushi (including the raw fish ones), deli sandwiches, soft serve, caesar salads, diet dr pepper/decaf coffee, medium rare steak (I can't eat steak any other way),

  9. mrsjyw

Why can't we have soft serve? Does pinkberry count as soft serve?

  11. littlebug

    honeydew / 7504 posts

Booze. I had several glasses of wine throughout my pregnancy (one at a time, obvi!). I also broke the deli meats thing once because I was absolutely CRAVING a turkey sub - I got it heated, though.

@daniellemybelle: FWIW, most bottled and even restaurant Caesar dressings don't have raw eggs in them. Same with things like cookie dough ice cream. From a food safety perspective, that would be a total nightmare for the companies to manage! So you go on and enjoy those Caesar salads, girl!

  12. daniellemybelle

    cantaloupe / 6669 posts

Y'all are bad influences - I totally got a Diet Coke with my (unhealthy) lunch. That's two days in a row!

  13. mamabolt

    nectarine / 2797 posts

@brady80: Soft serve machines can be contaminated with listeria if they are not properly maintained. Of course, it seems like listeria can be a lot of strange places you can't predict like the cantaloupe contamination last year, so I didn't worry about it.

From 20 weeks onwards I broke rules, I stuck to the rules before then. I had soft serve, coke, sushi (I only had the cooked chicken ones) and deli meats.

  15. googly-eyes

    GOLD / pomelo / 5737 posts

I don't know why people consider cooked sushi breaking the rules... Aside from maybe contamination from other sushi cooked in the restaurant I don't see the big deal! I ate whatever cooked sushi I wanted!!

I drank diet coke/drpepper every so often, and had frozen yogurt once in the second or third trimester..

  16. JoJoGirl

    cantaloupe / 6206 posts

@googly-eyes: Um yeah! something called "sushi" that doesn't contain raw fish is definitely not a risk

  17. MrsTiz

    cantaloupe / 6800 posts

I drink a Diet Coke almost everyday (no more than one) and look forward to it all day lol I have every intention of eating soft serve this summer, it is my weakness.

I figure i'm okay because I don't like anything else I can't have (sushi, raw meats, less than burnt steak, coffee, cookie dough, etc)

  18. Meltini

    apricot / 495 posts

My doctor is very laid back so technically I haven't broken any of his rules but I have broken almost all the common pregnancy "rules". I eat cold lunchmeat every day, runny egg yolks, raw honey, soft cheeses, soft serve ice cream and medium steak. I might have a class of pop once a month but I've never been a big pop drinker so that isn't a change due to pregnancy. I'm additcted to my Arnold Palmers though. Yum! I will admit to having a sip of my husbands whiskey a few times but I don't consider that rule breaking because a sip of alcohol isn't enough to hurt anything. I haven't had much sushi or other fish because I live in the midwest and it just isn't as good here.

All that rule breaking and I am only 18 weeks pregnant

  19. Cherrybee

    papaya / 10570 posts

Peanuts!! I know that the advice about peanuts goes back and forth and currently they're considered safe but I had intended to avoid them.... until I had a pregnancy craving for satay sauce!!

I have a few glasses of diet soda each week - we buy caffeine free but the sweeteners are supposed to be bad, too.

Oh and I've had two small glasses of wine during the 2nd trimester!!

  20. JessKas

    pear / 1693 posts

Pretty much all of the food rules. I regularly eat deli meat, soft serve, medium rare beef, and soft cheeses. I've had sushi twice. I make good quality food choices and I'm not worried about it at all.

I also have black or green tea most days, and coffee about 1-2 a month.

Sometimes I get crazy, and lay on my back. Mostly not though, only because I feel like I'm suffocating when I do.

An occasional Diet Coke (only a handful of times) and an occasional soft serve ice cream treat...Frosty and McDonalds milkshake a few times.

After reading these posts I realize- all the ones I knew about and pretty much all the ones I am just now learning through you all. This is my second and the first go around was the same story and she is perfect! A cup of coffee daily, had a filet for dinner last night, I adore a good eggs benedict, brie, the occasional beer or glass of wine, some salami...oh its bad when you see it all written out. My midwife knows it all and has no objections.

  23. Ra

    honeydew / 7586 posts

    All of them.

I've eaten raw sushi once a week/every two weeks since I've gotten over morning sickness (I do live on the coast though). Soft serve. Medium rare steak. Deli meat. You name it.

  24. Springtime

    pomegranate / 3204 posts

I was a bad pregnant girl. I had one coke a day, I had to have it. I ate raw cookie dough and licked the brownie batter several times. I ate lunch meat probably weekly and ate a few hot dogs!

  25. DigAPony

    pear / 1787 posts

I'll have a Diet Coke a few times a week. I also had a medium rare hamburger--I didn't order it that way but it's my fave and I was starving, so I just couldn't send it back!

  26. kjpugs

    grapefruit / 4862 posts

A bunch, and now I'm glad and feel less guilty! I've licked the bowl post-brownies twice, eaten soft cheeses/queso while out, and soft serve. I also had an affogado (sp? It's gelato with a shot of espresso over it) once while out because it's MY FAVE, but I hadn't had any caffeine that day so I didn't sweat it.

  27. LemonLong

    pear / 1698 posts

All of them except alcohol and cigarettes! I don't drink alcohol or smoke anyways. I had no guilt about breaking any of the rules: )

  28. yoursilverlining

    eggplant / 11824 posts

Uh, I broke basically all of them. Until there is a "rule" against fresh fruit and lettuce (things which have *actually* had listeria outbreaks...multiple listeria outbreaks....recently) I'm basically calling BS on the rest of these arbitrary, guilt-tripping rules. I'm firmly in the camp of "everything in moderation" and using common sense - in both pregnant and non-pregnant eating.

I ate rare steaks (I also ate some raw steak), sushi, coffee, cold deli meats, runny eggs, a half glass or so of wine once a week or so, Caesar dressing with raw eggs (homemade), unpasturized soft cheese and yogurt, etc.

I also did really actually dangerous things like drive everyday and breathe (do you know how many toxins we pick up with every breath?!?!)

  29. Ra

@yoursilverlining: I think I just fell in love with you.

  30. Ree723

    grapefruit / 4819 posts

    @yoursilverlining: Totally agree with you!

I was pretty good during the first tri - I had a regular Coke every day and continued to eat my steaks rare, but followed the rules other than that.

After first tri, I'd have the odd small glass of wine - never more than one at a time and usually only once every couple of weeks. I also started having my regular coffees whenever the mood struck (a few days per week), and I continued with my regular Cokes and rare steaks.

I did refrain from deli meat and soft serve, but everything else was fair game for me! Next time around, I don't think I'll refrain from those either,

Soft serve... it was summer and I had to treat myself. I was pretty good about everything else though.

  33. fairy

I drink tea all the time, and have occasional sodas maybe twice a week. I've also had deli sandwiches where the meat wasn't heated to steaming beforehand probably 5 or so times. I had one of those McDonalds milkshakes that they make with soft-serve, too. But other than that I think I've been pretty good. Most of it isn't a big deal anyway - everything in moderation

  34. JoyfulKiwi

    nectarine / 2667 posts

@yoursilverlining: Im totally with you! I think the chances of getting listeria from a frozen yogurt are probably less or equal to getting it from fruits & pregnant women are encouraged to eat those! So yes, I ate soft serve ice cream and yogurt like a damn fool. I did ask my midwife how big a risk it was and she looked at me like I was nuts.

I also had a few occasions in my last weeks where I drank 2-4oz of wine with dinner. And I sipped from others' glasses here and there throughout the 2nd & 3rd trimester. I also had a few non-heated lunch meat sandwiches and dabbled with feta cheese now and again.

    Rules I didn't break: sushi(I don't really like it) & smoking (I've never been a smoker).

Just today, I had a coke at lunch and had sushi for dinner. I have deli meat, runny eggs, the occasional cup of coffee, sips of hubby's wine/beer, and can't think of anything else right now but I'm sure I've broken other food rules.

  36. sera_87

    pomegranate / 3604 posts

Pretty much broke every one of them except for sushi & hot tubs. Oh and regular coke but i drink the zero version anyway (which I actually think is worse?)

ETA: I've always wondered what pregnant women in Japan eat ?

@Cherrybee: i ate JARS of peanut butter when I was pregnant. Lol

I broke a lot of rules. Sushi, soft serve, deli meat, med rare steak, caffeine ( not more than the allowed daily limit though), runny eggs, glass of wine.

I lived on Coke during my first and second trimesters but never enough to go over the daily caffeine limit. There was a time when I craved M&M McFlurries but I can't have them now with the GD diagnosis. I've had cooked sushi but there's no issues with that.

I really want a glass of champagne!!!!
