No experience with this, but I would be nervous too but would probably go by what the pediatrician says. And for the pregnant ladies, I would think a call to their Ob would be in order. I haven't heard that fifth disease is dangerous to a pregnant person but there certainly are other viruses that are so it doesn't hurt to ask.

When I got pregnant with DS, I remember the OBGYN saying that I couldn't be around kids who were sick with fifths disease because I hadn't had it. I was terrified that DD was going to come home with it from daycare, but we made it through without her getting it. So, for me, it was a big deal for early in the pregnancy because I hadn't had it. I don't know why it was a risk to my pregnancy, but it was.

I was under the impression fifths was not a huge deal, just something they work through?

Not a big deal as a child. Usually just ends in a slight rash and sometimes a really low fever. Lots of times parents even miss that their child has it. But getting it as an adult is horrible. I'd rather my LO get it now than later. My mom went to the emergency room a couple of years ago because she literally thought she was dying. It's actually not dangerous as an adult, but can be super painful. She was miserable for about two weeks.

I was exposed to fifths disease when I was pregnant...and I had never had it before. From what I know about it, once you've had it, you can't get it again, but it can cause stillbirth in pregnant women who have never had it. But I think for kids, its no big deal.

Bumping this up because I think my son is showing the signs of Fifths...the splotchy red marks on the face and red bumps on the body.

My understanding is by the time the rash appears, they're not contagious any more. I have a call into our ped to speak with the nurse on call, but it's 9 pm and she hasn't called back yet. I am wondering if I should keep LO home tomorrow or what.
