So weird! That would drive me nuts. Has anyone outright corrected him?

@Mrsk: When I saw it I read it as Cal (like California) - Um. So maybe it's just phonetic to him in his brain?

My MIL did that and it was infuriating me, especially since she would hear us pronounce it. I had my husband correct her - I felt it would be taken better than coming from me.

@Mrsk: I think it was only after a few weeks - she took it fine. I think she couldn't hear/get the difference between lay and lee but it was making me crazy!!

Short a Callum, like in California is what I think most people expect to hear. English language spelling rules would suggest it's said this way.

Long a Callum, like Kale, almost sounds like it's spoken with a southern accent.

He's definitely using phonics.

My FIL insisted on calling our daughter Helen Kay for her entire first year. NO one else uses her middle name. He's since dropped it. Not because I protested to him though. But I wanted to. I knew it would just start an arguement.

@Mrsk: This would drive me crazy, but I'll admit I had a mental block about a close friend's baby's name. I think the issue is that in his head the way it's spelled and the way HE is saying it is phonetically correct to him.

My friend's baby's name was Rita and I called her "Ree-ta" because to me that is how it looks like it should be pronounced. Friend pronounced it "Rit-a" where Rit rhymes with fit. Even though I KNEW this I had the hardest the time correcting myself to say it right, because I would mentally picture the name and just sound it out.

BUT if it were my own grandkid I'd hope I'd practice more and just get it right!!

My dad say my name funny when he slips into his accent. Um, he named me! Is it possible FIL is getting older and having trouble remembering or pronouncing it correctly? Have you asked MIL about what she thinks is going on?

My grandmother has spelt my (step)sister's name wrong for over the last 25 years! Honestly she has been my sister since we've been 7 so there is no excuse why and it is not that hard a name! It used to drive my mom crazy, but at this point we just laugh about it. I could definitely see where it would be worse with pronunciation though, just because you have to deal with it so often.

A few people have been mispronouncing our baby's name. In a way I honestly never envisaged happening. But I find that even when they know the correct way, they keep doing it, because I think the way they originally thought is burned in their brain or something and it just sounds more natural to them that way.

My grandmother called me Ann rather than Anna (my name) until she passed away, completely willfully (she knew my name was Anna but preferred Ann because that was her mother's name...). It must have driven my parents crazy at first. But it never really phased me--by the time I was old enough to pick up on it myself, I knew it was just one of her quirks. I also had a ballet teacher for 8 years (ages 4-12) who called used the European pronounciation of my name (Ahhh-na rather than Ann-ah, if that makes sense). There just are some names that have multiple pronunciations and lo will learn to deal. I think Callum is like Cara/Kara where the A could either be like car or care, and lo will just get used to having to correct people.

@nana87: Same here, my grandma never said my name right. It didn't bother me at all.

I empathize. I didn't think about the fact that there are two legit pronunciations of it when we picked my son's name. To me, it was *obvious* which was the "correct" pronunciation. However, my mom was saying his name wrong for a week until she finally heard me say it (I had called to let her know he was born, but hadn't picked a name, and sent the name via text... stupid me). Now people mispronouncing it bothers me less than it did early on, though close family would probably drive me nuts too. I handle it the same way your DH does. I just use his name often pronouncing it the way I prefer. Even if the other person doesn't get it, at least my kid will learn the "right" way to say his name, haha!

ETA: I should also mention that most of *my* aunts/uncles (who we only see maybe once every two years) still totally stumble over how to pronounce his name. sigh....

I think DH should talk to him the next time he mispronounces it. Say, "I know you probably don't realize it but sometimes you pronounce Callum's name incorrectly" and then give him a way to remember - "It might help if you think 'My PAL Callum". The first half rhymes with pal.
And then continue to correct him every time. I would think he would get it eventually - and I don't think there is anything wrong with correcting him.

With Asian parents/older generations, they butcher the crap out of names, even simple ones sometimes. That's why we all ask both sides to pronounce the following names to see if they pronounce it right or not. If not, we pick a different name because that would drive me crazy.
