I've mentioned it a few times before, but my parents were never traditional with holidays in the western sense at all. Now that I have DD, I'm really excited to start lots of traditions with her! What do people do for first ornament? Where do you get them? I've looked at a few, but they're so fragile and glass, I'm scared it'll get broken really fast ! I love to see pictures or inspiration, or links if you have them for first or yearly ornament ideas!

My mom buys DS an ornament and is planning to for evey year. It is something her mom did for us. She gets them from the hallmark keepsake collection. This year she took DS and they picked out a cozy coupe car ornament. She wants them to represent something from that year. DS has a cozy coupe at her house and loves it so it is perfect. It's not very breakable at all either.

We have so many 1st Xmas ornaments from last year that were gifted to her. They all have the year and some say her name. I bought one at Hallmark and I like to do a dated ornament each year so will get a 2013 one as well as some ornaments specifically for M.

My grandmother bought us ornaments each year. She always looked for interesting ones, so we have some that she picked up at local handicraft shows or some lovely Venetian glass ones.
My mom has carried on that tradition with her grand kids, but to make her life a little easier, instead of searching all over for ones that represent something from that year, she picked a theme for each grandchild and buys a new one for that theme. The three older kinds have Santa, angels, and snowmen. I'm not sure what she's picked for the three babies added this year.

My first Christmas my mom bought me the first in a new series of hallmark ornaments. Every year she bought the next in the series, to this day I still get them 25 years later. It's a different way to do yearly ornaments but I will love putting on my tree for years to come.

We have a tradition of shopping for a new ornament each year! I love hiding the unique quirky ones in the tree each year.
Ours aren't themed in any way.. We just try to buy something that reflects what happened that year. Pre kids I bought ornaments that went with my tree's theme that year (an icicle for my all white and silver tree, a red heart with gold glitter for my burgundy and gold tree..) But now with the kids we just buy one ornament for each kid. We usually buy it during the after Christmas sales..! But last year we just got a pretty pink bow for LMW (first Christmas with a daughter!) And a glittery guitar for WJ (his obsession last year). The year before that WJ got a baseball themed ornament.
I wish I had pics! I'll take some when we bring out the tree!

I bought one of these for the in-laws last year and loved how it turned out! I'm kicking myself for not buying one for DD's first Xmas! I may buy one this year with lat year's personalization to make up.

Ornament traditions are so fun!
As a kid, I loved playing with the ornaments on the tree, so I purposely bought one for Pete's first Christmas that wasn't fragile. I chose this one from Etsy:

@shopaholic: yes.. Last years ornaments were a really quick purchase at target... So not fancy like previous ones, but we wanted unbreakable and cheap! The icicle was from pottery barn and every year I'm terrified its going to break.
Oh, I also wanted to add, I use a sharpie and write the year on each one. This is one of my favorite holiday traditions! I have a special box for the yearly ornaments and wrap each one in tissue.

I grew up with a Christmas Tree fully covered in Hallmark ornaments so for me, ornaments are all about Hallmark so I definitely got A a Baby's First Christmas ornament from Hallmark. We were also gifted a silver bootie ornament from Things Remembered that is engraved with her name and the year. It is so nice. Heavy, but really nice. It's a wonderful keepsake.
DH and I get an ornament if we travel somewhere special and actually gave them as a wedding favor since we did a destination wedding in Maine. When A and I went to Disney last March I got her an ornament from there as well and had her name and the year put on it. I'll get her one each time we go and if we go on any special trips as a family. It makes for great fun when you decorate the tree because you can reminisce about the trip and your experiences. Those are some of my favorite ornaments now.
Lastly, I will say that the ornaments closest to my heart are my favorites from when I was little. As we got older we were allowed to take a couple of our favorite ornaments with us when we left the nest. My absolute favorite is a frayed bulb showcasing The Muppets. I think it's from 1982. haha! This thing is proudly displayed on my tree every year!
I think it's the little traditions that make the holidays so special. I'm so excited for you as you'll be experiencing many of these traditions for the first time yourself!

I've bought a yearly ornament for each of our kids, I pick something that they love that year. That way they have some variety! One thing I recommend is writing the date on the bottom, I've forgotten

My parents did an ornament every year and we're doing it with C! I love it.
Her first Christmas ornament was from Hallmark and it was cloth. We haven't picked out the one for this year yet.

@autumnlove: thanks for reminding me of Paloma's nest! I have a jewelry bowl from there. I want to get C the giraffe! We are always joking that the giraffe is his spirit animal because we were gifted so many giraffe things, and the first toy he loved was a giraffe (not Sophie but he loves her too). That ornament would be a sweet reminder.

For A's first Christmas, we bought a green bauble that had 'our first Christmas all together, December 25, 2012) handwritten on it. We bought it when I was still pregnant. -

DH and I get a ornament every year and it really just depends on that year of life. So far we have 13! And a few of his grandma's.. -
We will get her one every year. Our parents gave us each one every year so we are going to continue that with her. Then one day when she moves out she will have ornaments for her own tree. My parents buy us an ornament every year for our anniversary in November. I have no doubt that they will be getting R one every year since they get my nephews one each year.
I love Hallmark ones. I get my goddaughter one each year and make geared toward what she was into that year. So she got a flower girl one the year we got married. Last year she was really into art so an art one. This year she got glasses so I think I am going to do something with that. Planning on doing the same for R.

We have quite a few! Almost all of them were gifted.
I sang twinkle twinkle little star to Chloe for months. It would instantly calm her. Paloma's Nest made me an ornament that has a star in it that simply says "twinkle twinkle"

we have a few that we were gifted for A's first christmas last year and we also have a tradition of going to Bronner's Christmas Wonderland every year and getting a custom painted one with date that we started when we got married. we got one for A's first last year when i was preggo, but my mom ended up bumping into our keepsake tree and it broke!
It's okay though, we're going again in the next couple weeks and getting a replacement and one for this year too

I love all these ideas. My grandparents always used to get each of us kids a ornament. My mom started putting our initials and the year on them. I got to take my ornament box with me when I got married!
We always got hallmark ones, which haven't broken, and I do love Paloma's nest. All great ideas!!

Update: I found this ornament yesterday and it's a contender to be her 1st real ornament! Doesn't match our existing ornaments/theme, but I like that it reminds me of her Sophie the giraffe and giraffe WubbaNub. lol.
Who knows... she might end up with multiple "first ornaments". -

I did a traditional, baby's first christmas ornament last year. @shopaholic: This is the exact ornament we got for her! She has giraffes in her nursery and I love that the date is on there. If you are worried about her breaking it, you could always do one "fun" or toy ornament and then one keepsake ornament.
