I finally pulled the trigger and let DS (5 mos) really CIO. Before, we did 10 minutes max, but couldn't bare it. Tonight, I was like that's it. If I don't get some sleep, I'm going to lose it.
He cried for 30 mins before he fell sleep. It was def excruciating and I am not looking forward to round 2 during the night.
I am just worried about neighbors being pissed off esp at night. Sigh, wish me luck.

Good luck!!!!!!!! It is hard, huh? When we CIO with LO, instead of just sitting on my bed listening to her cry, I treated it as work. I had a notepad and pen and I took notes - time, what kind of crying, how long, when did she start to settle, etc. It helped me stay calm and helped me listen to the way she was crying.

@Rubies: Yep, that's what I did too. I'm hoping miraculously that CIO will also get better or at least shorter!

Well my stubborn little man cried it out for almost 30 minutes then slept for 5 hours straight then cried around midnight for 20 minutes then fell asleep for 2 hrs then I fed him and he fell asleep for another 2 hours then at 4 am, he was awake and I couldn't deal with the crying so he stayed in bed with us, but was fully awake. Still trying to woke this CIO out. Not looking forward to day 2.

maybe you could offer your neighbors a white noise machine if you're worried about making them mad?
i know it's not easy, but cio was life changing for us, and i have no regrets. just remind yourself that you're not doing it to your baby...... you're doing it for him. once he's getting all the sleep he needs, it'll be totally worth it!

@Mrs. Bee: thanks, Mrs. Bee! I'm hoping Day 2 and onwards that it will get easier. Also do you think it's okay to let him into our bed when he's awake at 4 am or should I continue to let him CIO?

@Clementine: i think you should continue to cio. all babies have a strong shift in their sleep cycle at 4:00, which is why they wake up at that time. they really need to learn to put themselves back to sleep at that time, or you may have a perpetually early riser on your hands.

Don't worry, day 2 and 3 are much easier. My LO cried for almost 2 hours the first night, but it lessened to 1 hr the 2nd night, 30 min the 3rd, and barely 1 minute the 4th.
And definitely do not let him in your bed at 4am. Otherwise, he'll continue to wake himself up in hopes that you'll come to pick him up, which kinda defeats the purpose of sleep training and sleeping through the night.

@Red: Thanks, Red. I am seriously hoping tonight, it will get easier and you and Mrs. Bee are right. I need to let him CIO at 4 too. Somehow I feel even more exhausted by letting him CIO, I guess, it's the emotional component of hearing your child cry on top of the physical weariness, but I know in the end it will be worth it.

@Honeybee: Well, he went down tonight around 6:50 pm and CIO for 13 minutes! This is a vast improvement from 27 minutes last night! Hoping naively maybe he won't wake up for the rest of the night. It's the worse when he's crying in the middle of the night. Sigh...

Yay!!!! glad to hear there was improvement. It took 4 days for us, but those 4 days of crying was well worth it for the hours of uninterrupted sleep it gave us afterwards!

LADIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE DID AWESOME DAY 2!
I put him down at 6:52 am, of course, then he cried for 13 mins.
He slept from 7:05 am until (drum roll, please) 2:28 am!
Then I fed him and he fell back asleep until (another drum roll, please)....6:30 am!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Clementine: I never had to do CIO so I don't know but I think he is taking to the method really well and it may be a little worse tonight but I think by the end of 1 week he will be sleeping really well. Just a guess!

@Clementine: sometimes they have a little regression on day 4. but for most babies, they are fully sleep trained within a week!
charlie was super easy to night train and was completely trained by night 4.
