DS is 9 months and hasn't said a word yet- he does lots of babbling and stringing consonants together- we are anxiously awaiting the first word! (I did ask the Dr at his last apt on Friday because I was freaking out thinking something was wrong- and he told me to relax and that it would happen anytime now)

Lorelei was about 7 months, and it was, "poop." And believe me, it was a real word. Because I did not want to write in her baby book that her first word was, "poop."
Ellie was around 10 months and said, "Mama," first.
Fits their personalities quite well.

@Mrs. Twine: this made me giggle.
Chloe's first word was "dada". She said it while we were test driving a car. I remember being so worried the salesman would be like "ohh gotta buy this, she said her first word in here!"

@Mrs. Twine: hahaha!
I'm convinced my dd just said her first - we were eating breakfast and I asked her "more, or all done?" Like I do every day. She said "ah-da," and when I asked again, "all done?" She did it again! She wasn't talking or babbling before or after this, so does this count???

Depends on what you mean by first words. LO says Dada and Mama and Baba all day long but not AT us, I don't think. So I don't think he has any "words". He's 10 months old.

I don't consider it a first word until LO is using it in the appropriate context. She's 5.5 months and has been babbling "mama" for a while now, but she doesn't understand that I am mama, so to me it's not a word yet.

6 months DaDa, 7 months mama and then silence until a few days ago. She says dada and mama a lot now but I'm not sure if they are real words. She is almost 9 months old.

@travellingbee: @lawbee11: same with dd. she's been mamamamama dadadadada bababababa all day long for months but I didn't consider those words either due to the lack of context.
@yerpie110: aw, lucky!

@lawbee11: I agree with this definition. I think some people are desperate to hear "words" in babbling
LO's first word was "dada"; I can't remember exactly how old she was (bad mama!)

LO is 12 months and we're still waiting for a first word. he's been babbling "mamamama" and "dadada" and "bababa" and "tatata" but like you, i don't consider them first words.

@lawbee11: @yoursilverlining: I agree- it needs to be used repeatedly, in context, etc. That was the criteria I used to determine when the girls had a first word.

We counted "Dada" as his first word at 11 months, though it took a little longer to convince him that the cat was not also Dada!

M's first word was "hi!" at 10 months. I wasn't counting it at first but she said it in all the right contexts (picking up the phone, waving at people).

@Mrs. Twine: Your girls crack me up!!!! Love your girls!!
@travellingbee: @lawbee11: DS says "hiiiii" a lot but not in context. He'll randomly say it when I'm talking to him and that's the "sound/word" he makes in response. If it's between mama and dada, I hope mama is first!

Excluding mama and dada because he's babbled that forever, he just started saying "Ball!" at 12 months.
Anything round is "ball!" He has some play fruit and chases the apples and oranges and plums yelling "ball!"
Granted, a lot of non-round items are also "ball," so to him it might mean "object I like and I can see" but it's definitely his first word.
My ILs were trying to convince me he said "birdie" at 11 months. Yeah...my 11 mo old looked at the tree you were pointing at across the yard and noticed the little chickadee and said "buh." Sure....

@jedeve: I'm convinced his first word other than mama and dada will be ball. He is obsessed with them.

11 months, "da" for dog. He's 12 months now and the babbling and syllables have increased exponentially, but no further meaningful words.

When E was 6 months old, she put her hand on DH's face and said, "dada". But she's never done it since, so it was coincidental. The other day, it sounded like she said, "uh oh" and she'll sometimes say "yeah" but I'm waiting for something to be deliberate and intentional for me to count it as a word.
DH and I are tough critics for what's a "first word"

"Ball" at Eleven months. She was saying "mama" and "dada" but not always to us. Ball was the first word that I was 100% sure was a word because without fail she would pick one up and announce "bah! bah!".

@MamaMoose: That's what LO does! He is soooo excited that it's a ball and wants to make sure everyone knows what that is. You would think he discovered Atlantis!

@edelweiss: same here. i have been "worried" about this milestone, but i realize i need to relax as she'll say something in her own time i'm sure. but i'm gonna talk to her ped about it tomorrow just to help me relax some more.
@hilsy85: i could have SWORN she was trying to say bubble the other day when she was holding a bubble guppies book. i tried repeating it endlessly until she looked at me like i was crazy, dropped the book and moved onto something else. ha.

@blackbird: i also wonder if DH and i are too tough of critics. but i did hear my friend's DD say "mama" to her and if DD said that, i would be ecstatic! so i still say no words yet.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@birdofafeather, considering E calls me, DH, the kitty, her table, her toys, and everything around her "Mama' still....I dunno

LO had been saying "mama" and "dada" from the time he was about 8 months old but I think it was kind of arbitrary- not necessarily with any context or to us, specifically. At about 11 months, though, he declared "duck!" and could identify his duckie lovey and pictures of rubber duckies.

13 months and no real words yet. She says dada a lot, but it's not in context.
pineapple / 12793 posts
DD said 'hi' consistently at seven months when she learned to wave.
honeydew / 7091 posts
Does 'uh-oh' count? She's been saying that one for awhile, starting at about 11 months. She also *tries* to say 'hello' when she picks up her toy phone.
Otherwise, we're at 1 year with no real progress with words

My MIL taught him "all done" at 10 months, then he didn't learn many more until after a year.

@birdofafeather: ha aw cute! I thought it was such a random first word for LO!
persimmon / 1223 posts
@Mrs Green Grass: This is us too! Our LO is 11 months and has been saying dog (as da of course) all the time while looking at and reaching for our dogs. I'd love to say mama or dada was his first but I still feel like he just says those words without them meaning us.
cantaloupe / 6397 posts
At 9 months she babbles constantly. And I think she may be saying "da" for dog, because she looks right at the dog and says it, and the other day my mom was on speaker phone and her dogs barked and Madeline said "da!" I'm not calling it yet though. She has to convince me a bit more
cantaloupe / 6687 posts
@LuLu Mom: same! At 8 months she would say "up" whenever we got her from her crib. Her other words shortly after were ball and owl
pomelo / 5820 posts
I was just thinking about this today! LO says dada but he has no idea what it means, so I hesitate to call it his first word. He has also been saying baba and wawa (no mama yet, womp womp).
